advice wanted for making even better pictures.

Post by berth »

Yesterday my girlfriend took a whole lot of pictures off my Rickenbacker basses. One of these is this one which I will not upload here so that everyone is able to see the original.

I'm curious what (except for cropping) we could have done to make a better picture than this. Shot with my girlfriends Canon 5D mark II full-frame camera and her 24-70 L lens.

Overall it looks fine. A couple things I would do differently is, for one, crop out the right edge of the background seamless as you can see past it, clean the fingerprints off the hi-gain surround, and block light from the BG to make the bass "pop" from the BG more. I know that last comment sounds counterintuitive but the binding does help here. See Exhibit A. This was made with my 30D and 24-105/4L IS lens at f13 @1/60 sec., ISO400, using hot lights (16" SV reflectors and an B&M 8" fresnel).

One of the tricks to getting the chrome to pop is using a white foamcore or similar board to "whiten" the chrome, it takes some moving around to get it right but the results are worth it.

Thanks Jeffrey. This is feedback which we can use. I didnt want to take my 8 Rickenbacker and 4 non Rickenbacker basses with me in the car to my GF's studio. So we had not too much room for the background paper in our living room. There was no lightning on the paper roll. It was just close to the bass. Maybe I shoul take my basses to the studio next time.

Why ISO400 ? (The 5D is amazing with ISO by the way. Still good pictures at ISO3200)

I was wrong about the lens by the way. My GF has the same lens as you have.

Depending on the background color I will let some light spill on to it but still control the light with gobos (light blocking cards) to get the desired effect, although it can be tricky to get it just right.
The image quality of the Canon CMOS chips are so good I sometimes will use a midrange setting to ensure adequate depth of field and high enough shutter speed to minimize and camera shake even though I use a good tripod (late '80s Gitzo 224 with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 ball head) and the mirror lock-up function. I bugs me that I have to go into the Custom Function menu to enable or disable the mirror lock-up, I wish it were a double function of the Print button on the back of the camera, instead.

I agree that ISO 3200 is still very good on the Canon cameras, something that swayed me to the 30D vs. the Nikon D200 that was also in the running at the time I bought the Canon. The D200 had some better features ergonomics-wise but in the end it is image quality that is most important. Another factor was that the Canon focused much quicker than the Nikon. Not to mention Canon's superb L series lenses. :D
