Dick Dale on Ed Sullivan-1963
Re: Dick Dale on Ed Sullivan-1963
Watch his left hand. Is that guitar strung backward, like a lefty?
All I wanna do is rock!
Re: Dick Dale on Ed Sullivan-1963
Dick plays a left-handed guitar strung upside down; ie the high E is the upper string and the low E is on the bottom. His signature model is right handed with a reverse headstock and a reversed slant on the bridge pickup to give a right-handed player with the guitar strung normally the same string/pickup arrangement that he has.

Well, that's different, to say the least. It certainly works for him! I never knew that; guess I should go to Surf Guitar School for a Dick Dale 101 class.

Yup, he also plays nearly piano-gauge strings for that real thumpy sound.
That clip is cool, his tone is pretty low on the reverb in that performance. It's also one of the earlier performances of The Wedge that I've seen.
Re: Dick Dale on Ed Sullivan-1963
His low E is a .60, high E is a .16.
Actually, kiramdear, you should go to Surfguitar101 for the Dick Dale class!
