Fretless non-burst Walnut 4001

Don't see these too often, a non-burst Walnut. This is the first fretless in that color variation that I've seen:

Hate it on a Gibson, love it on a Rick.

I associate walnut Gibsons with cheap, 1970's Norlin-era junk, but love the lighter RIck version. Maybe it's because there are a millions of walnut Gibsons, but very few (non-burst) Walnut Ricks....

I would buy it if I didn't live in Aus.

there's a fretted one on the bay as well, a '74 i believe, with that mid '70's fender brown. i kinda like it. when i bought a black p-bass in '76, i was also looking at a brown j-bass next to it, but the surface wood had imperfections that were painted over so i didn't get it.

I've got a '76 P-bass in "walnut" that I rather like. I'm not overly fond of this particular walnut 4001; I think I prefer the "walnutburst."

When you say "these", are you referring to fretless 4001s, or non-burst Walnut finishes?

Fretless 4001s account for 49 of the 2067 total 4001s in the registry, which puts them at about 2.3% of 4001 production.

I don't know how to search for non-burst walnuts in the registry, but it would only be 2 or 3, I believe. Less than 0.01% of total production, maybe...

One theory is that non-burst Walnut was never an intentional colour option, but occassionally the painter would just get carried away when attempting a proper Walnut finish.

Interesting. I was referring to the walnut finish. I wish I could get a 4003 in that color.

I own both a Walnut and an AutumnGlo 4001, and wish either (or even Montezuma Brown for that matter) were a regular production colour.
