it quite depends on simple fact - if the strings are included in the price ....dpowell wrote:$50 is more than fair for that amount of work, IMO.

The top guitar store in my city charges $60.00/hour regardless of what work is being done. I'd say the guy you were dealing with is just a tightwad.weemac wrote:I do repairs for the local music shop. Most of the work I get asked to do is to stick the headstock back on, on cheap guitars.
I did one such repair recently that was a fairly straightforward fix. In such a job (for those who done know) it requires:
Removal of the strings
Removal of the machines
Get the titebond in there
Clamp it up. I use some baking paper so my clamp blocks don't stick too much.
Clean some of the spills.
Let it sit for around a day....
Remove the clamps..
Clean up the joint (remove glue residue and polish it up)
Fit the machines.
Fit the strings amd tune it up.
I charged $50 to the shop I do it for and he balked at the price.

An astute observation !!!

On this same topic. My buddy the photgapher is also a very skilled repair tech. The guitarist in my band tripped over his cable. Down came his LP and crack. Never heard a room go so silent. This guitar is his baby. Hes a family guy with a single income so it took a while to be able to afford this. I thought he was going to cry right then and there. But as you can see, you almost can't tell it even happened.

OUCH!!!
Nice repair though...

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
Re: Did I charge too much?
Gibsons don't like to be dropped CJ. I saw breaks and cracks similar to that a few times over my playing career.

You'd think that with over 50 years of headstock breaks Gibson would have caught on that there was a design flaw....

When I glued up my JL Casino's neck separation, I used a small piece of PTFE (Teflon®) which won't let pretty much anything stick it.... I use some baking paper so my clamp blocks don't stick too much ...
