4001c64 mute. How does it work?

I just bought a used 4001c64 & Im having a heck of a time trying to figure out the mute.. I'd like to use the it, but I dont know how to raise it. The manual doesn't mention anything about the mute either. I've tried moving the 2 screws on the bass & treble side of the bridge but they are really hard to turn.... Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
