Shoot 'Em Up Baby

Post by JeffZ »

I don't think this has been posted here yet. Here's The Searchers on Beat Club in 1969, lip synching "Shoot 'Em Up Baby". This came out right at the end of their time on Liberty, and would have been the final track with any John Blunt involvement. I think this only came out in Germany but I would defer to Roy on that. This would be circa late 1969.

I ordered a DVD claiming to be Beat, Beat Beat: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AS7V4O -- the review posted says The Searchers are singing 3 songs live. Should arrive here on Monday. I'm hoping to see The Searchers and not some go-go dancers blocking my view. I'll let you know.

Yeah, Cheri, let us know what the dates on the performances are. "Beat Beat Beat" performances are almost always live which is nice; most of the "Beat Club" tapes of bands I've seen are almost all lip synched.

Beat, Beat, Beat Volume 3 DVD

Post by chriscurtisfan »

The DVD is excellent quality. Audio and video. It's not quadraphonic 4 channel stereo, but it sounded good on harman/kardon Toshiba laptop computer speakers which I bought specifically to play my music.

The Tremeloes vids are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bswxaeyQDFI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n03g8nsaBro
plus one I don't know called "Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever" -- didn't look for it on YT as I don't care for it.

The Searchers were fabulous. OMG, I've never seen Mike close up in that quality video -- he's even cuter than I thought which was worth the price to see. Unfortunately for me, Chris is not part, but that's ok, I have a good friend who will get this DVD passed onto him.

Songs were exactly these vids:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfeMlqS1gZU - Love Potion #9
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjNiIvUEtIw - Sweets for my Sweet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbKuFSFXwgc - C.C. Rider

So these vids are on YT, which all of you know how to download, I'm sure. In my opinion, it was worth the low price just for The Searchers and The Tremeloes good quality videos.

Other bands: The Smoke and The Move -- didn't play yet as I don't know either of them.

Would be nice to get the whole series, but I don't listen or watch much of anything that isn't The Searchers. Missing out on their music for 45 years -- my friend just gave me a gift of 20 of their CD's,like new, complete with liner notes, and not a scratch or fingerprint on a one. He inherited them, has his own massive collection, so passed them onto me. I will be a little busy, and very pleased to be the guardian of these treasures. Here in the US we were robbed of their music and I will never forgive radio for not playing them and don't even talk to me about The Byrds, who copied their style and got plenty of radio play.

So that's my un-official review of Beat, Beat, Beat Volume 3. If you don't miss Chris, you will have spent your money wisely.

Jeff only released in Germany, allegedly there was some fallout with the record company as the group wanted the extended version released which basically was just a verse, this later appeared on a long since deleted German CD.

Supposedly this led to them leaving Liberty

Personally never asked them but doubt story about the fallout and leaving, because of it, untrue, on all Liberty recordings session musicians were used

Thanks Cheri for the info on the video, as I'm also a fan of The Move I may pick this one up!

Roy,

Do you have any of their Liberty B sides? I understand at least some of them were group compositions. I've heard all of the A's but I would like to hear the flips if you have them.

Jeff

There is not a track I don't have to best of my knowledge posted some Liberty B sides on You Tube and also the Liberty single they released under the name Pasha, not surprised it was rubbish.

Here are all the B sides on Liberty, bar one, B side of the Pasha Single I'll post that later apologies if boring for some

Not that it matters much. But wasn't Suzanna the b-side to Kinky Kathy Abernathy? I remember these two songs well, as I bought the single. Shoot 'em up Baby,
I never heard back in those days.

Thanks Roy. I was familiar with "Lollipop Man" but not the other two. "Suzanna" struck me as a good song but not in Mike's key, I assume as it was a flip they didn't get much time to work on it. I thought Frank's song "Over The Weekend" was quite good; is that the flip of "Umbrella Man"?

Yes Jeff was flip of Umbrella Man, I actually think Suzanna is great, written by John McNally.

last of the Liberty B sides for Jeff

This track was the B side of the now very rare single released by The Searchers under the name Pasha, on the single itself it was credited as Pussy Willow Dragon but correct title is Pussy Willow Dreams released in 69

I really enjoyed Susannah and The Weekend -- both excellent! No need to worry about boring us with anything Searchers, Roy. Just bring them on! And many thanks!

"Pussy Willow Dreams" is miles ahead of "Lollipop Man"; I can't believe Liberty didn't flip this one over. Very nice Sunshine Pop; I'd love to hear a good stereo mix of this song.

I think "Suzanna" is an excellent song, but the track would sound better if they had bumped the key up a half step, Mike doesn't sound comfortable on the low notes.
