Who can tell me something about a Gretsch 1686 archtop? Were these among the first electric Gretsch guitars?

Pete, could you post a pic of this guitar? Do you mean 6186, rather than 1686? That would be their least expensive archtop electric, the Clipper. I think it made it's debut in 1959 or so. These are really very sweet sounding/playing guitars. The earliest electric hollowbody I can remember would be the Electromatic.

I think you have it correct. Saw it in the Heritage Auction and was wondering the history. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
