As seen in Kona

Post by manta »

I saw this guy playing an nice Danelectro 12 in Kona at a weekend fair last week. He just played non-stop, doing some very nice bluesy riffs. So didn't have a chance to talk to him but he could sure make this little 12er sing. Thought you 12-string freaks might enjoy it.

I've been experimenting with other kinds of music rather than the usual jingle-jangle Mr. Tambourine Man sorts of things so many have come to expect from a 12 string, especially a Rick 12 string. I'm not totally satisfied with my results, yet. But it's fun trying to find a work around to bending the G string, admittedly a difficult thing to do on a 12.

On the other hand, you can get some really great sounds bending the B course. One of the strings always goes sharper than the other, lending a pretty jarring dissonance to a musical passage. Something I'm sure Blind Willie McTell, and Leadbelly would approve. 8)

Yea, I am not sure how to describe this guy's music as it wasn't really bendy stuff, but kind of like slide without the slide. It was quite nice and full and he was really into it so I listened for a while, put a couple bucks in the hat and had to leave. If you ever see some guy with a Danelectro 12 in Kona, give him a listen. He had a Fender Bass sitting behind him on a stand too, so maybe he had a partner on break, although I didn't see another amp. I personally don't see Danelectro 12s very much at all, so I was just fascinated at seeing the guitar.

PS,

Since that is certainly not a Bellzouki, it must be a newer model Dan.

Looks like a DC '59 RI, unless it's vintage. Cool axe. Love my Danos. 8)

Ah Kira, I am envious. I haven't played/owned a Dan since I was 19. Great little guitars.

The new ones are cheap enough to afford several. I have a DC'59 in Copper and a single cutaway classic baritone in Commie Red. Upgraded bridge is recommended if you play them a lot. Those lipstick pickups are absolutely killer! I can't believe you wouldn't already have one, George. They are great for surf music. 8)

That's a Dano DC-12, from around 2000-2001. I have a purple-sparkle one--pretty nice for the price (I got mine new for around $250).
