Led Zeppelin - Kashmir (with Chris Squire - an impression)

Post by walker »

One day I thought: "If Chris Squire got his hands on Zeppelin's "Kashmir', what would he have played?" This is my impression of what he might have done if he had played on this track in 1973 instead of John Paul Jones. I added a solo bass intro in the style of 'Into The Lens' and 'Does It Really Happen?'

Led Zeppelin - "Chrismir"

For the overdubs outside of the main bassline, I borrowed some of Squire's sounds and technique from 'The Fish' and 'Wurm'.

The main bassline is the '68 4001

All overdubs are the '79 4001S lefty - the harmonics left & right, the Mutron Fuzz bass, and the clean bassline which ghosts the fuzz part.

Mark Mark Mark... brother this is #$%#^&% awesome. I so love your tone. And your composition kicks azzzz as well! Me and some buds love to get "enlightened" and Jam to some zep every now and again...so much fun... I have some crude recordings somewhere. We do Song remains the same and Kashmir but I always remain faithful to JPJ's version. This is going on my ipod. Thx again for this Brother.

Hey Brian! Great to hear from you. Thanks for the props. I haven't been in a Zep phase for awhile, but this one is a gem, isn't it? And when it occurred to me that it had all kinds of room for the Squire treatment, I was all over it!

Yeah its great dude. I so love listening to your stuff. I really wish I lived closer. How can I get a copy of that? I thought I could cut and paste the wave file but I dont seem to be able to. Do you have an mp3 I can grab somewhere?

Try DL'ing again. I had it blocked, but you should be able to snag it now. I'm pretty sure it's the raw AIFF file.

Listened to this 20 times today... at least. This tone, this performance... so good. This could make the uninitiated fall in love with RIC basses just as hearing Squire all those years ago did for me.

You're too kind, Brian!

Well, if you liked that version, hopefully you'll like this one even better. In spite of the positive feedback I've heard, the bass sound was still bugging me a little bit - not quite "there." So I EQ'd just the main bassline a little differently and remixed. The difference might not be that apparent, but personally I think this version is better.

And ye shall be known henceforth as "CLANKUS MAXIMUS". :P

That was great! I am having a setup done on one of my Ric's,and the guy kept raising the action, because of the "rattle" he was getting. I said " No,Dude,it's supposed to do that!" 8)

Ps JB, ideally you should have 2 Ric basses for both string options, right?
