Physical difference between toasters?

I don't have any 70's toasters to compare to the modern ones...are there any physical dimension differences ?

The reason I'm asking is I have a '72 4001 pickguard and was going to use it on my '73 project. However, when trying to put a modern toaster through the hole, I find that it is an extremely tight fit top to bottom but doesn't fill the sides of the hole... I'm talking gaps of around an 1/8th of an inch on either side....

the control stems don't fit the existing holes in the p/g either.... :?

No differences that I know of; is the pickguard original?

I'm told it was ...

I guess I could have one made ... I wanted an "aged" one to match the existing mojo

At some point toasters became a little taller (as did high gains). I have seen a few samples but don't know the years/time lines.
