The REVOLVER man!

The Revolver Man: KLAUS VOORMAN … born 28 April 1938 in Berlin, Germany

Between 1966 and 1969, Klaus Voorman was the bass player with Manfred Mann (he’s the one playing the penny whistle in the “Mighty Quinn” clip). And, as einar correctly says, he also illustrated the Beatles “Revolver” album cover prior to joining Manfred Mann.

However, he has another claim to fame, being that allegedly, one day in October 1960, following an argument with his then on-off girlfriend Astrid Kirchherr, Klaus Voormann was wandering down the Reeperbahn, in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district, when he heard the sound of music coming from a club called the Kaiserkeller. Out of curiosity, he decided to take a closer look at what was going on. The group playing at the time was Rory Storm and the Hurricanes … and you guessed it, the next group to play were the Beatles.

According to the way Klaus Voormann tells it, he had never really heard music like this before having previously only listened to jazz. Klaus Voormann was to persuade his friend Jurgen Vollmer, together with Astrid Kitchherr, to return with him to the Kaiserkeller Club to watch further performances given by the Beatles – and the world knows the rest of the story.

bartyclue you let me off the hook. I would never have guessed who it was from just the photo of him holding the dog. But, I know who it is from the other photo of him playing the guitar – which I suspect is a somewhat earlier image of him taken while he was still playing with the group and before his hair turned white.

Think of a Braveheart bunch of heavy rockers. Though, personally speaking, at the time I was more into the theatrical antics of that other group from Scotland, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band than was into Nazareth.

Manuel Charlton (born 25 July 1941) is notable for being a founding member of and the lead guitarist for the Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth from 1968 to 1990.
I really liked Nazereth back in the day. Their two biggest hits... at least here in Canada were covers!! "Love Hurts" by the Everly Brothers and "This flight tonight" by Joni Mitchell.
