Nice new Gibson Hollowbody - Midtown Standard
Nice new Gibson Hollowbody - Midtown Standard
I have to say I was pretty impressed with this. Build is solid, and nice tonal range.

Yeah, I've been wanting to find one of those to try...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Store in Tarrytown. I was actually thinking of your quest for the Starfire when I checked it out.sloop_john_b wrote:Where did you try it Marc?
Most hollowbodies to me have a tin-y type of low. This bass was much more full on the low end.

Cool man. The Midtown looks great on paper for sure. Without having tried one, what scares me is:marc61 wrote:Store in Tarrytown. I was actually thinking of your quest for the Starfire when I checked it out.sloop_john_b wrote:Where did you try it Marc?

- Potentially loooong reach to the 1st fret. This was an issue with my Warwick Star, and I can only assume that all 34" hollowbodies suffer from the same affliction - but I don't know!
- No "sweet spot" pickup, like the Jack Casady or Starfire I - just MUD or ZING.
- Neck diver?

Glad I don't have to worry about the first one...sloop_john_b wrote: Without having tried one, what scares me is:

I'm probably going back into the store tomorrow (They have my mandolin hostage). I want to try it with my pic and a strap. For sure it's not muddy on any settings I tried.sloop_john_b wrote: Cool man. The Midtown looks great on paper for sure. Without having tried one, what scares me is:

Don't be fooled by the look of the neck pickup, it only LOOKS like a mudder.sloop_john_b wrote:- No "sweet spot" pickup, like the Jack Casady or Starfire I - just MUD or ZING.

No neck-dive, strap attaches at upper horn not at heel.

Thanks Ronn...definitely GASing for one.
Re: Nice new Gibson Hollowbody - Midtown Standard
I looked at these on Musiciansfriend recently and if I hadn't bassed out with my Precision last year, I would be interested in trying one out. I really like the look of hollow body basses and guitars.
