Small Faces

Earlier this year, I discovered the Faces, but today I bought a 2-disc retrospective by the precedent to the Faces, the Small Faces. Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood were obviously fans, and Pete Townshend and Dave Davies have mentioned them positively in interviews and such.

Suffering the same fate as The Kinks, the works of the Small Faces aren't easily available in the US (barring Amazon), and the collection I've linked to is out of print (and heaven knows how long).

Anyone here a fan of Small Faces? If so, do you like them better than the Faces? Any other albums worth checking out?

I've never been a fan of The Faces.....but always been a fan of the Small Faces.

They were one of those bands that, unfortunately, got ripped off by managers and record companies. I read in the Ian MacLagan biography that never one penny of Small Faces record royalties ever made it to the band members. :(

Always liked the Small Faces but often not The Faces. My album of choice would be Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, from 1968 - truly wonderful! :)

I'd say that if you like the Small Faces, there's a good chance that you'd also be into Humble Pie - check 'em out!

A great band Jake. If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend you invest in the "British Invasion" DVD on them:

This DVD is part of a series which has excellent production values and which features some great high quality live footage.

My particular favourite on the Small Faces DVD is this outstanding performance of Tin Soldier:

Doesn't really get much better than this.... 8)

Wow, I've become such a diehard for this group that I never checked back...time for an update:

In early November, I took delivery of The Ultimate Collection, and was mightily impressed. They such had a raw power and energy that was not duplicated in the other band (a Rod Stewart/Ronnie Wood vs Steve Marriott debate). It was all I was listening to, and I was so impressed, I bought this box set:

Can't wait to take delivery of it, especially since I know it has Ogdens Nut Gone Flake. When I mention Small Faces to anyone, that's the album they bring up. Better be good!

And for you serious SF diehards (unfortunately, I'll have to pass on this one :( ), Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones spent the lions' share of this past year working on this:

If it highlighted album cuts as well as what's included, I may have been tempted. Kenney and Mac say that the sound quality is just like what they experienced in the studio.
