He was in great form, as was the band when I saw them in the mid '80s at Prisneyland (Allegro Non Troppo reference).

Interesting stuff. I remember those tapes being a "viral" thing in the 90's before there was such a thing as "viral!" Legendary indeed. Seinfeld took some lines from the tapes - that's worth googling.

Good Lord! One wonders.
There is no reason to ever be bored.
...why yes, I suppose I do have a double bound guitar fetish...

Mel Torme wrote a good book on his friend Buddy Rich called Traps: The Drum Wonder.
There's a short chapter on "the tapes." Namely three incidents: 1) Late '70s, early '80s; Rich's band consisted of recent graduates from Berklee and N. Texas and he was prompting them to greater heights; 2) He disliked hippie beards and hair and demanded they modify their appearance. One trombonist arranger especially earned Buddy's ire, "I want him off. I don't want him on the bandstand!"; and 3) Overall disdain for the musicianship of his band. Fired! "Get outta my f^*kin' bus!"
