Customized Ric I Saw
Saw the bass below at my local Sam Ash over the weekend, hanging back in the corner of their acoustic room. I quickly asked about it, and an employee told me it was owned by an employee, and that he had customized it (looks like pretty heavily). Looks like it got a new top, fingerboard, electronics, and finish. He said it wasn't for sale, so I didn't pry too much, as he was selling a guitar to someone and I didn't want to bother him too much. Interesting piece for sure. This was the only picture I got:

Wow that top is amazing and all the white trim, and the inlays, very custom.
Kind of digging the headstock trim too.
It looks like whoever did the customization was very talented.
I'd play that if the price was right.

No pic to see, here. Do you have to join/sign-up with IG to see anything?
Why not post the image directly here (attach it).

Been out of the forum game for a minute. Couldn't get the embedded picture to work before. This work?:
Re: Customized Ric I Saw
Is that really a modified bass or someone's custom (home?) built project? The shape of it is different in some ways (or, is it just the low-res photo making it look that way?).

Yeah, it definitely could have been totally home made or a heavily modified faker. The picture was taken with my phone from 8-10 feet away, and I couldn't get closer. The owner/maker/modifier wasn't there, and I didn't want to bug the guy working there to try and let me get my hands on it. If they don't want people asking about it, I guess they shouldn't have it hanging on a store wall.
Re: Customized Ric I Saw
It's a restoration/modification of a real Rick that was pretty beat up and broken.

Thanks for finding that CJ!
Very cool to see the documented resto process, the neck inlays are even more impressive with those pics.

Appreciate the info (and better pictures than I got). I felt like it was somewhat familiar. I don't know if I saw it posted about here years ago (or maybe on Talkbass), or maybe I saw someone playing it live. Very cool and unique piece.
Re: Customized Ric I Saw
I came across that a number of years ago and recognized it from the picture. Only took a few minutes to find the site again. I can't remember if it was ever posted here, but there's a good chance it was...

Wow! Looking at the restoration pics at the very beginning, it appears that whoever adjusted the truss rods of that black 4001 REALLY REALLY cranked them, to pop the fretboard that far off.
I don't think I've ever seen a 4001 board popped that bad.
