Neck profile specs- history?

Post by Tache3 »

Hello all,

So, I've done various searches on the forum and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I think the search terms must be too generic. So I'm hoping that someone here can maybe point me toward a resource.

Is there a chronological history of the changes to the specs of the 4001 available anywhere? I'm particularly looking for any changes to the neck profiles. I can find plenty of references to general changes to other features e.g. the withdrawal of the horseshoe and the change from toasters to high gains etc but nothing that digs deeper into other specs.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

There was a project some years ago to do this. There was even a spreadsheet with the data, as I recall. I don't remember where it was. Here, maybe.

This might help.

That's exactly the kind of info I'm looking for. Thank you.

We all did that many years ago. It was simple to do and quite informative. A few basses of mine are in that (I no longer own any of those particular Ricks, these days).

That's the spreadsheet I was referring to in my previous post. I think John Allgaier made that Excel sheet.

For those who don't want to or are unable to download the files, here's a quick summary table. It's worth noting there was a lot of variance even within single years when multiple data points were present. I'm not sure how much of that is due to differences measurement technique from the owners vs. actual variation in the instrument. It would be awesome if the data set could be updated with more recent Ricks.

Decade 1st 3rd 12th
1960s 11.1 11.5 12.8
1970s 11.3 11.6 13.1
1980s 11.3 11.6 13.1
1990s 11.5 11.8 13.3
2000s 11.5 12.0 13.6
