Removing The Hand Rest on a 4001

Post by Robert_Brunn »

Mark,

You were such great help with the strap bolt, I've got one more item to get advise on!

I play with a pick and would like to remove the hand rest over the bridge pickup on my 4001. I thought it was a simple operation and tried to remove it by unscewing the screw on each side on the rest. It feels like it is spring loaded. When I loosened both screws I could not pull the thing al the way out. When I tried to rescrew it back the rest wanted to sit on top of the strings.

Big mess. Hopefully I havent made a big problem for myself.

What is the "Proper Way" to remove the rest. We dont have a Ric Dealer in this backwards town I live in and I'm not sure any of the local guys even know what a Ricky is.

Thanks For the Help.

You don't need a rick daler for this one.

First remove the strings from the tuners.Pull them out from under the plastic cover on the bridge pickup.

Remove the 4 small screws that hold down the plate the pickup is mounted to.

turn the whole thing upside down and unscrew the coil assembly.

Remove the cover ,and set it aside while you reassemble the pickup unit.
Make sure you get that ground wire with the light bulbed shaped toothed washer on before the spring goes on .this will ground the plate.

Remount the pickup with the 4 small screws and restring.

TaH Dah!

I have a point of contention over the model numbers 4001 and 4003

They are the same instrument except for

THE TRUSS RODS!

Yes this means that all the 4001 talks ,Except for the truss rod issue ,will apply to the 4003.

I look at it this way;

Gibson has made a LesPaul 'Standard' since 1952 and there have been some changes more radical in design than Rick changing the truss rods and coming up with a new model designation.
Fender has how many variations on a Stratocaster?
Still it is the Stratocaster .

How about cars...VW Beetle, changed every year for years ,goes away ,comes back ,looks slightly different ....STILL THE BEETLE!!!!!

I will now get off my podium/soap box
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!
