"Opening The Cassanova Club"

Benny and the Black Cats would be one of a handful of groups opening the Cassanova Club on February 9, 1961. They would join a few other well-known groups including The Big Three, their debut, The Remo Four, Tommy and the Metronomes, Mark Peters and Vince Wade.

The Club was named after Cass of Cass and the Cassanovas, but as Sam Leach has noted in his fine book The Rocking City,

"Ironically after naming the club after Brian Cassur and securing his exclusive services, he never actually played there. Cass had a few personal problems to sort out and he decided to leave town for a while , disappearing down south. Losing my resident group at such short notice nearly left me in a spot, but thankfully the group themselves, comprising of drummer Johnny 'Hutch' Hutchinson, Adrian Barber and Johnny Gustavson, agreed to carry on. Sticking their necks out, the chose the name The Big Three, but their confidence was well-paced. They were a hell of a trio."
