     We contacted our inside rep at Rickenbacker to find out if this guitar was legit, and if the "stop bar" tailpiece could be original. We discovered that it was original, and that this guitar was one of two "prototypes". If you are a Rickenbacker collector, or just a big RIC fan, this is one of the rarest guitars you could hope to acquire. Here is the body of the e-mail from Rickenbacker in response to out inquiry:

    Hi Wade,

    We went into the archives for this. That serial number checks out as being one of two prototypes for that model, being made with a “bar” type tailpiece rather than the R. The 480 first went into our catalog in 1971 with the R tailpiece. So this model you have would be rare.

    The body is made of 2 piece, center seamed, mahogany with natural finish. The neck is maple with rosewood fingerboard. There are 24 frets with small dots for position markers. The truss rod cover is the clear lucite, vintage style. There are 2 "high gain" pickups. The tailpiece is a prototype "stop bar" tailpiece.
