While we can't state that there is any connection between this 7-string A-22 Frying Pan and the 6-string version used by Alvino Rey, the similarities seem too much to have been a mere coincidence. Alvino's Rick was housed in a small guitar body painted white, and so is this one. Alvino was playing with the Horace Heidt orchestra in the '30s, based in San Francisco, and this instrument turned up at an auction in SF in the early 1980s Of course there are differences, such as the fact that on this version the original thru-body string mounting is eliminated by the use of a trapeze tailpiece, and Alvino's Frying-Pan-in-a-guitar-body had only about 12 frets clear, while this 7-string version has 15 frets clear of the body. But both are painted white, so you have to wonder….
The small guitar that was sacrificed to house this Frying Pan was not a cheapie, as it came with a deluxe form-fitted hardshell case. Looks like it was made with mahogany back and sides, and a spruce top. Our guess is that it was possibly a tenor guitar because of the small size (the ivoroid binding on the top edge was painted over). To mount the Frying Pan in this body three holes were drilled and tapped into the cast aluminum, one on either side (at the narrow waist of the guitar body) and one into the underside of the neck (The mounting screws are well disguised and not visible from the outside, but you can find them with a magnet) We did not try to remove this lap steel from the wood body surrounding it, but we did lift the pickup to take these interior photos and everything inside appears to be original. Note the very top of the headstock, where a pearloid block, of the same material as applied to the top, was glued over a rectangular recess.
