The Kenny Blackwell Double neck.
In 1961, amateur musician Kenny Blackwell ordered an unfinished double neck body with a batch of un-assembled Rickenbacker hardware.
The Blackwell double neck was the first of its kind produced by Rickenbacker and recorded by an invoice. Electro String sent it to Rickenbacker’s sales office on November 30, 1961. Made to Blackwell’s specifications, the double-bound hollow body instrument had a bass neck on the bottom. This neck had an extremely short scale. It had only sixteen frets. The Spanish neck on top was a full scale, 360 style with twenty-one frets. Both necks had Deluxe bindings and triangle inlays with two chrome bar pickups for the standard neck, one horseshoe pickup for the bass neck, and a Rick-O-Sound jack.
Blackwell finished the slim 1 1/2 inch thick body. The bulk of the guitar has original Rickenbacker parts. However, he bought a few electronic components, like the stacked tone and volume controls, elsewhere. Blackwell made the pick guards out of clear plastic and later mounted a fuzz-tone in a clear plastic box onto the face of the guitar. Both necks had sliding bridge covers with mutes. This rare one of a kind prototype double-neck was photographed by Richard Smith for his Rickenbacker History book (page 215)
