This model is a 1970 with all the deluxe appointments. What I think really sets this 4005 apart are the classical f-holes. I wrote to George Gruhn about it and he said he had never seen one with the classical f- holes. He connected me with Richard Smith who also had never seen them on a 4005. Ric vaguely responded that some were made, probably for export, but no production totals
are available.
The story that I have is that it was brought back from England. A friend
of mine reluctantly traded an azureglo 4001 for it. It was used by a Philly
band called The Fad in the early eighties. The guitarist also played Ricks.
I did sound for the band and after they split it was retired to my care. I
can probably dig up some pics of the bass in action.
