I wouldn't have thought so, given that it's not a short scale guitar. The factory fitted strings are probably Rickenbacker CRW 10-42. Although, I would suggest just try different gauges (and manufacturers) and find the ones that are best for you. Sure, the truss rod and the nut may need a tweak and ...

A fret polishing system I could recommend from experience is one made by THOMAS & GINEX. It's available on eBay and is very simple to use.

You could start with a light fret polish. This has rectified a similar problem for me before. There are a number of fret polishing systems available, generally with a bunch of different grade abrasive papers that gradually polish out the pitting. Ah ha. I thought it was maybe being shipped off for modification/ respray/ etc.

I must agree though, there is real therapy to be had polishing a Rickenbacker!
