A fret polishing system I could recommend from experience is one made by THOMAS & GINEX. It's available on eBay and is very simple to use.

You could start with a light fret polish. This has rectified a similar problem for me before. There are a number of fret polishing systems available, generally with a bunch of different grade abrasive papers that gradually polish out the pitting. I just got back from the UK confluence. It was great. Tony and his band were really rockin'! (Fantastic original material and a killer version of Lola.) I don't have any pics but there quite a few cameras clicking away.

Ah ha. I thought it was maybe being shipped off for modification/ respray/ etc.

I must agree though, there is real therapy to be had polishing a Rickenbacker!

The 1997 will be treated to a full 'Wilczynski' treatment this weekend, BTW...
