Gene Vincent who was with Eddie in the car later said that he was, as it turned out, ironically singing ‘California Here I Come. One of the policeman who arrived at the scene of the accident was the young Dave Harman, who later became Dave Dee, of DDDBMT fame. Until the situation was resolved, Dave ...

Write and Wrong

There are songwriters who have in fact never written a song, probably the most famous being Elvis Presley. To be fair to Elvis it was Col. Parker’s doing. Songs like Love Me Tender and Heartbreak Hotel have Presley’s name on the label along with those of the real writers. Given that the Colonel got ...

Great Label Copy

The are some No.1 records where the label would have read much better if someone else had recorded them.

Two Little Boys – Ant & Dec
99 Red Balloons – Puff Daddy
A Whiter Shade Of Pale – Cream
I’m A Believer – Cliff Richard
Return To Sender – The Singing Postman
Nut Rocker – Ozzy Osborne ...

Roy, sorry mate but 'Ain't No Mountain' was released two weeks after my sixteenth birthday in 1967.

What interests me about duets is when they are right they manage to inject the music with an extra special something.

Great Duets

For me some of the best duets of the last forty or so years have been by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

Their version of Ain't No Mountain High Enough is so exciting. There's that bit at 1.38 where Tammi comes in and it never fails to send the shivers up my spine.

Your Precious Love has to be ...

I'm going to see Georgie Fame play with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings next week at a charity gig in Holland (Rotterdam). He's still got such a great voice and never fails to do a great set.

Maybe it's my browser. I'll try using Firefox instead of Safari

I agree on CSM. He's a good writer. His John Lee Hooker book is a really fascinating read (Boogie Man I think it's called)

Hi Peter

What browser do you use? Maybe that could be the problem. My post looks fine on mine, as does yours so it's baffling.

I've got quote marks around the beat svenglai and dashes between the singers real name and stage name. How do they come out?

The Beat Svengali

Larry Ôthe Beat SvengaliÕ Parnes was an old fashioned manager of pop stars, he was dubbed ÔMr Parnes, Shillings and PenceÕ which gives you some idea of where Larry was coming from. Mr ParnesÕ theory of guaranteed stardom was simple; you needed the right sounding name. Unlike Americans, whose real ...

Hatchet Man

Back in spring of 1983 one of BritainÕs best-known music journalists Charles Shaar Murray Ð a man of strong opinions Ð was working on the NME. He once called Eric Clapton an Òold fartÓ whose records made him Òashamed to be over thirty.Ó So it probably didnÕt worry A&M unduly when he was given an ...

Interesting editing on the Shadows clip on Youtube. You'd almost think the editor thinks that Jet played lead! Nevertheless, it's a great time piece
