Re: What's wrong with this bass?

Weird. I'm going to take a guess and say that the nut is cut to low on the D string and they strung it to the G tuner (sharper angle) to stop the string rattle. Just a guess.

Did Tuxedos come in the "S" model? I've never seen that before.

I'm a little confused here. I understand JH wanting to protect the horse shoe, but what about the 4001 bridge? That is more identifiable as Ric than the horse shoe (IMHO) and yet I can get one easily from Allparts.

Also.... I have a screwtop type pickup for this project. It makes some sound if you tap in the poles when its plugged in but it registers 0.0 on my meter. I'm asuming it needs to be rewound????? (I'm not much of an electronics guy) I could use some suggestions on who does that kind of work. Thanks.

Azure! Azure!

The color is on with about 10 coats of clear. I'll let the lacquer sit for a week or two then start the sanding/polishing.

Years ago I read an interview with Stanley Clarke. He said he would rub down his strings with aftershave after playing. The theory being the alchohol would get the sweat and oils off of the strings. I tried it and it works pretty good. I really use it a lot on my fretless basses before I play (I don ...

I used to restore old British sports cars for a hobby. When I would find one I really wanted (and already had 4 others at home) I would tell my wife "I found this great Harley Davidson..." nowing there is no way she would ever let a motorcycle at out house. When she would put her foot down on the ...

Thanks for the link to the color chart Gary. That will be very helpful.

I decided this was a good time to re-do the frets so out they came. Does anyone know the process Ric goes thru on finishing the fretboard?
Do they spray over the frets and then dress the frets after? Tape the frets then spray?

This is where I am with the project right now. I'm trying to decide on a color. I will probably go with one of the original solid colors for a 1972. I love the transparent colors but there is some screw hole repairs in the headstock and some natural flaws in the body. I thick Rickenbacker would have ...

I tried for 2 days to get the neck out of the joint without a saw using heat, hot knife...everthing, trying to make this project somewhat reversable. It started to take a toll on the neck and the neck was what I wanted so out came the band saw. With much guilt and hesitation the neck came off.

At ...
