Re: Vote about your 5-string experience

Tried a 5-string (a very nice Carvin) for about a year, ultimately decided it wasn’t really my thing. I’d already done the BEAD thing twice over the years, and would only use the BEAD bass for a song or 2,reverting to my regularly tuned 4. So,I just don’t seem to really feel the need for those extra 5...

Re: Differences between 4000S and 4003W

What is a 4000S?
Guess you meant a 4003S,but not sure what you’re really asking. Also, there is an S version of the Walnut 4003 as well.
The walnut basses are for sure lighter in weight, and the oil finish feels fabulous.

Re: Belated NBD

Nice grab and the TE thrown in ain’t too shabby. Right? I mean i checked internet sales listings, and these or similar seemed to be selling in the $400-500 range,so if i don’t find a use for it,i’ll sell or trade it. Effectively brings the price of the Laredo down even further if i do. It’s a nice s...

Re: Belated NBD

Both my Cheyennes had a murky sound that went away with the new components Dane put together for me. The Fireglo Laredo had all that when i got it,and so opened my ears to the sound possiblilities the hb1‘s could provide. When i decided to go for SC pickups on v63-ish Laredo,i had new 250 k pots in ...

Belated NBD

Back during the last week of August, while half of Oregon was burning,i made a cross-state day trip to pick up this beauty. It was from a Facebook listing by a fellow RRF member, who was basically reposting Craigslist finds from all over the USA. (Thanks!) It is a ‘00 Laredo that the guy i bought it f...

Re: What is a fair price for a used 4004L in excellent condi

The 4004 series has never really caught on in a big way with consumers,so i am always surprised to see folks hawking used ones at $2k+ prices. I bought my first one 8(?) years ago for $1600,and fell in love. (An ‘04 Cii). Since then,i’ve gradually accumulated 4 more, paying a low of $1k apeice for my...

Re: 4004 Fingerboard Wood

Considering they're still showing the 4004 models pictured with the lowered pickup positions, updates are probably not forthcoming. :|
I use a bit of lemon oil on my Cii's fingerboard to refresh it now and again.

Re: Looking for 4004 Cheyenne I

Woody: We have twins, down to the La Bella Copper White Nylon Tape Wound strings and Dane's control harness! Sweet! I really like those Labella's on that bass, great feel and a neat hybrid (thumpy yet twangy) sound. (The harness on mine is MV/Panpot/tone without the coil taps, which i regret not gett...

Re: Looking for 4004 Cheyenne I

Welcome,Urtzi! I searched for one for several years, and finally found a nice used one in Portland. Seems like more recently they've become harder to find. I payed a premium price for mine, but after a minor mod to the electronics,I'm very happy with it. It is the lightest, and most contoured Rick bass...

Re: Toaster vs. High gain, which one for you?

Seems to be a recurring question lately. :D
I prefer the scatterwound toaster to the newer high output higains, because it is cleaner sounding in the high frequencies.
The older higains also sound better to me,even though they were about half the output of the newer ones.

Re: Finest set of roundwounds available today?

So I guess what I also need to know is will these strings sound better/ last longer than the stock Ric strings? After some thought, I am looking for a string with a lot of fundamental (not a lot of harmonics, chorus sound) but still growls like the Ric rounds. I've had a set of Kalium strings on on...

Re: Choosing between RIC Hi-Gain, Toaster, or CA pickup

Out of the 3 pickups listed,i would definitely NOT go with a new Rick higain if you're looking for a more vintage clarity tone. My Modded Laredo has a toaster AND a CA 60's flattop pickup, which are very well paired, and surprisingly quiet. As i mentioned elsewhere,You could have your old pickup rewou...
