Re: Laredo vs Cheyenne II, rear upper body contouring
I like the gold hardware just fine on any color except mapleglo. (It just looks wrong to me,so i swapped the hardware on my '04 Laredo FG and '04 Cii MG). Every one of my (4) 4004's have been modded in the electronics, and my two Laredos have had pickups completely moved and/or replaced. I don't thin...

Re: Laredo vs Cheyenne II, rear upper body contouring
It's possible that, if I ever get the chance to try a 4002, I won't like it, but I don't think that's very likely. I like my 4004Cii well enough, but I think I prefer my 4001 and 4003 basses. If you prefer flat edged bound bodies and bound necks,as well as the old bridge, then Yes,you would like the...

Re: Laredo vs Cheyenne II, rear upper body contouring
Thanks Woody. Dane, I wish I was making it up and I know it may seem strange but it is 100 percent true. I have nerve entrapment caused by prolapsed discs in my neck and the long term nature has permanently affected the nerves in my arms. You're not the first to find it strange, but sadly it's all ...

Re: 4003s to 4000 conversion
Woody, I got the Flat Top because I feel that the current Hi-Gain units are a little too much "Hi" and I am tired to unwind them. Cannot wait for it! Yep,exactly. I was going to use a '72 higain i had,but it didn't work out,so i think i have the best thing i could find on short ...

Re: 4003s to 4000 conversion
Fantastic,Marcello! Bellisimo!
Oh,and i can tell you, you're gonna LOVE that CA flattop pickup.
The one i have in my Laredo custom sounds very similar to the original higain in my '74 4000. (Minus the noise!)

Re: Laredo vs Cheyenne II, rear upper body contouring
Of My collection of 2 cheyennes (i and ii),and 2 Laredos, there are definitely small differences in the feel of that contoured edge. Since hand sanding is involved, you're likely going to need to experience the bass in question directly to determine if it's going to feel right for you. (Of my 4,the '9...

Re: Brightest flatwound strings to keep that rounds Ric tone
Chromes Super Soft set, and ideally, replace the .060 D string with a single .055. This produces a better balanced feeling set and are nice and low in tension, a bit more than that of TI JFs. Is that the ecb80 set? ECB80 - Long Scale 40-095: .040 .060 .075 .095 I was looking at bassstrings online,t...

Re: Brightest flatwound strings to keep that rounds Ric tone
Definitely Chromes. I +1 Jeff's suggestion for Super Soft gauges, but I keep the .060'' D string and like it just fine. Have you ever tried the chromes on your fretless? I've tried about 6 different string sets on my Cii since i had it defretted, and i can't seem to find anything i like from top to ...

Re: MESA and RICKS
I had one of the walkabout/scout 1-12 combos about 12 years ago. Loved the cab,but didn't really get on with the head. I replaced it with a Markbass cmd121p combo, which i thought did a better job of reproducing the distinctive differences in my basses sounds. I would still love to hear what the scou...

Very Nice indeed,Stephen! I've wondered what a gold pg/trc would look like on the 4003sw,and the results are great!
So,you're also thinking of making it fretless?

Re: The good old days
Even though I'd first gotten really enamoured with 4001 basses in 1972-73, there were a lot of things I didn't know about them until I found Mike Parks site, which was a welcome refuge from all of the alien autopsy and OJ conspiracy websites in the early to mid'90s! Suddenly here was Mike Parks, sel...

Re: Will Roto Swing Bass 66 strings really destroy frets?
The last few times i've used them (because they came on a bass i bought) i couldn't believe how rough feeling they were to my fingers. So i am certain they grind away at fretwire just as well. They're cheap for a reason. Otoh,i've had a set of Kalium strings on my Fg laredo for 5-6 years now. They s...

Re: 4004 CII question on changing hadware..
I'm still not ready to ascribe the difference in tone to the wood... Then how about this: the 4004L has a finished fingerboard; the 4004Cii does not! I dislike the sound of my 4004Cii when it's just me, the bass, and the amp. Not sure what it is - something to do with the electronics. But that all ...

Re: The good old days
What i got is a Laredo, with the original Schaller bridge, and tuners,a half-inch spaced Rick neck sw toaster,CA bridge pickup in Rick surround,a v63 type pg,and new wiring with appropriate SC components. I like to think of it as an evolved version of my old modded 2-pickup JG 4000 i had back in the ...
