Re: Poor old 4000
I tried to edit my post since I moved most of my pics to Imgur, but that doesn't seem to work. Since a few months I replaced the white switch tip with a proper black one, installed a treble bezel and swapped out the neck hi-gain for a toaster made by the Creamery from the UK. https://i.imgur.com/oY9...

Re: Poor old 4000
A lot has happened since my last update: The luthier plugged the hole and recut it to fit a 'normal' pickup: https://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/SKannekens/RRF201_zpstghuyf6t.jpg Afterwards he refretted it with vintage-correct small frets: https://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/SKannekens/RRF...

So what ever happened to this project? Is it completely restored?

Re: Poor old 4000
Some great stories guys! Thanks As for the project, I ordered a lot of parts (thanks to Dane and Rickysounds) and am still looking for a few minor things (mute foam, pickup height screws) https://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/SKannekens/IMG_5335_zpsil6fakqc.jpg The bass itself is in the capable h...

Re: Poor old 4000
I'll be that thing sounds good with that neck humbucker. Not quite to be honest. The wiring is all messed up, so it's hard to switch on both pickups or to blend in the humbucker with the hi-gain. The hi-gain on itself sounds great, but I still have a toaster made by Sergio lying around that I want ...

Re: Poor old 4000
So I brought the bass to a luthier and he’s assessing the stability of the neck this week.
The bass will definitively need a refret and a new nut.
One of the previous owners had taken it out and tried to recut it, but ruined the whole thing in the end and just stuck it back in...

Poor old 4000
A few weeks ago I got my hands on this Cliff Burton-ized Rick 4000. It's built in July 1975 and has a wonderfull neck, but has seen better days. With some work this could become a real nice player! https://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/SKannekens/Rick%204000/RRF_01_zpsz0qaqd5x.jpg The good: - The...

He sure has some amazing basses! It would be nice if there would be a video of him playing the 4000 and 4005

Funny thing Chris Squire mentions in his interview on meeting Jimi Hendrix is that Yes was playing Motown covers at the time. And he was playing them with his Rick and fresh rotos

Re: It's really hard to like Rickenbackers...
I'd say from experience that your band-mates want the P because of the way it LOOKS, not really because of the way it SOUNDS. They want a certain on-stage LOOK Think this sums it up nicely. If they really want a different sound I would rather try eq-ing or some different strings than buying a bass....

Re: Got my hands on a battered 4000! Restore it or play it?
Seems that the HB-1 is a good choice, but I also hear good things about Sergio's pickups and the Classic Amplification pickups.
Any comments on the work of Sergio or Classic Amplification?

Re: Got my hands on a battered 4000! Restore it or play it?
Thanks for the suggestions. I've been playing it for a while and it does sound good, but it's missing the Rick growl. I've seen someone putting a hb-1 in their 4000, can anyone comment on the sound of those compared to the 'normal' 4000? And is there a lot of difference between a hi-gain from '75 an...
