Re: Something very special is making its way through the fac

Will it line up with the drill holes though? (besides the top far left obviously)

Does anyone make one that comes all the way back to the smaller metal pickup ring as opposed to the larger HS one?

Re: Neck Pickup height

You can put the pickup on without the cover screws. It can be done. I did it very carefully with my Toaster.
Twisted very fine wire to hold the cover on, then also removed the grommets. I tried cutting them in half and even that wasn't close enough for me.
So, in the end I installed it VERY ...

Re: That McCartney Rockshow "Wings Over America" tone...

I've heard that now a few times. My guess is neither him or any roadies ever tweaked his truss rod.

Those are awesome! Can you refer me to Tony? I don't know who that is. Tony "Pickguardian" Tony?

Re: That McCartney Rockshow "Wings Over America" tone...

In this video from the 1975 Australia tour, you can see that he already has the high gain pickup installed. And, it looks like he has his bass plugged into a little mixer. You can see him walk over to it and make what I guess is an adjustment to his volume. It happens at ten minutes into the show ...

Re: Something very special is making its way through the fac

The Pickguardian "vintage conversion" is all wrong. It has rounded corners, that "double hump" at the bottom, and 1" spacing pickup cutout. A good "vintage conversion" should have the elegant original shape, with screw holes that line up with recent-issue 4003 guards.

Right, he does do a 1/2" cut ...

Re: That McCartney Rockshow "Wings Over America" tone...

I was about 20 feet away from him at the Wings concert on May 16, 1976 at the Capitol Center in Maryland. It was general admission and I literally ran as soon as the doors opened so I could stand right in front of the stage. I watched a roadie doing signal checks on all the instruments. He would ...

Re: That McCartney Rockshow "Wings Over America" tone...

Not a big fan of his sound in that era (although his bass parts were at their best IMHO), but it always sounded to me like the bridge pickup solo'ed, with the tone at least halfway rolled off. Yes I see the pickup switch in the middle position, but that can mean anything - he could have the neck ...

Wow nice bass, who made that pickguard and whats the model of it called (the shape, and the material?)

Looks like a 4001 to my eyes..

And pickguardian will do a pick guard for you in that material.

Re: That McCartney Rockshow "Wings Over America" tone...

I think the tone has a lot to do with picking the stings closer to the bridge.

I've also been told that the action on that bass was super low, about .115" to .120" at the last fret. Hm..? What I’ve read (don’t remember were) is that the action was very high on his bass, and that they (RIC) was ...

Re: 2003 Rickenbacker 4003VP - what's different about it?

I assume you have tried different volume levels with each pickup? Lots of folks prefer full treble pickup, and maybe 80-90% bass pickup. Others can explain it better, but it has to do with one pickup affecting the other when both are engaged.

It's basically an effect of spatial comb filtering ...

Re: That McCartney Rockshow "Wings Over America" tone...

Last night I was told by the nice guy that did the work on his bass before the Wings Over America tour that he removed the cap for Paul, and soldered it to the back of the bridge PU's tone control (in case he ever wanted it in again, there it was). Clever.
He also told me the neck toaster ...
