Well they did have thick fretboards and thin neck timber. The timber in general seems light. This contributes to the sound and probably to the weakness of the instruments, it would account for the high mortality of these instruments early on..

Boosting magnetic power will make it louder and clangier (if that's a word)
But at the expense of natural compression and even sustain..
If you want more mids plus a vintage look do a toaster cover conversion on a modern hi-gain.

I imagine that if you want to best recreate the RM1999 sound with a modern bass the best starting point would be a 4003sw

The gauges were odd due to the compressed wound strings. I think the string starts near to a 46 but was compressed to 42. The tension changes probably not at all.. I have just put half a 12 string set of those old strings on a highly strung guitar. They sounded great when attacked with a big plectru...
