As we say in Norway: "personal taste is like the butt – divided down the middle". (In Norwegian it rimes and sounds much better).
Uff da! You Norskers have a lot of sayings. lol
Beautiful work Geir! Looks perfect, I don't think they come from the factory that nice. What finishes did you use ...

Paul
I know there is some descepancy with the jack plate, the pots date to 1974.
So my goal is to get it put together as a workhorse.

A new output harness is $25 US. It's a simple drop in, and you can just clean up the plate with the serial number.
Had to replace it on my 75 4001 about a year ago.
Saw your post and choked!.........
Just picked up a 74 4001 bass I'm getting into playing condition. Thought while I'm tearing it ...

Re: Light Guage String Set Recommendation
Thanks for the clarification Tom. I got the ol' girl in parts, needs a fret job, but the neck looks straight. (Having the PUPs rewound, etc.)
I would hate to finish my rebuild only to have the neck splinter across the room on my first tuning...... I think that might ruin my mood for the day.

Re: Light Guage String Set Recommendation
Ok....... I admit to being new to this. I've played guitar since the 60's......... but only started playing bass a couple years ago. I've been playing short scales and just picked up a 74 4001. I'm reading a lot about going easy on the old 4001's using only Ric strings...... but no one on this post ...
