Re: traveling to SCOTLAND

Scotty: At the risk of thread drift, let me explain what happened at The Tarbet in October, 1988. We got off the train in the dark at an unlit station, with a dead telephone hanging by its cord in a pouring rainstorm. I left my brother with the luggage and wandered down a trail until I saw a light -...

Re: traveling to SCOTLAND

I've been to Scotland twice. I got around using a Britrail pass on two trips in 1988 and 1996. Edinburgh is a great place to visit, but I'd try to get to Inverness. Of all the things I did there, I think taking a walk from Urquhart Castle (on the banks of Loch Ness) to Drumdrochnit was the most memo...

Re: Capitol Albums, Vol. 3

Jake: I've never heard the 8-track or reel-to-reel 'Yesterday And Today', but I believe 'I'm Only Sleeping', 'Dr. Robert' and 'And Your Bird Can Sing' were in stereo on the album. I don't recall any obvious differences between the UK version of 'And Your Bird Can Sing' and the US version (BTW that's...

Re: What model was your first Ric

1964 325 FG with F-hole Note: When I got it in 1979, it had the finish stripped, was routed for Gibson humbuckers, had an aftermarket bridge and stop tailpiece, Grover tuners, a homemade single level pickguard, and a raised letter TRC. The only original hardware left was the jackplate, the strap but...

Re: Mike Campbell does a John Lennon

Jake: Look closer. That guitar is definitely a RICK 350 model. You can tell by the fret markers that it's a full scale guitar.

Re: Capitol Albums, Vol. 3

Jake: I'm still waiting to get a Vol. 2 set that has the correct masters on two of the discs. As you might recall 'Rubber Soul' and one of the other discs presented true stereo and fake mono (i.e. stereo fold down), instead of true stereo and true mono. I haven't ever seen the updated version with t...

Re: So...how about a Texas gathering?

Patrick: Pete was alluding to the fact that the show organizers had no problem allowing non-guitar related vendors to help fill empty booths last year. Several aisles unfortunately looked like a flea market. The Dallas Guitar Show is much smaller than the Arlington Vintage Show, and there is less em...

I've never sent in a warranty card on any piece of musical gear. I've got lots of RIC warranty cards sitting in my cases...

Re: Quadrophenia

I recall seeing that movie when it came out in '79. Soon after I found myself test driving a Vespa 200 at a local dealership. Unfortunately, I didn't get my first Vespa until about 5 years ago. It's a '66 VMA1 125. Shortly thereafter I added a '64 V9A 90 to the collection. Unfortunately, it's a bit ...

Re: Represently speaking

Brian: I was in Dallas when punk music came along. I saw The Police on their first US tour at the Palladium in Dallas with a crowd of 15-20. 'Roxanne' was just breaking on the radio, so a local station hosted the event for 99-cent admission. They didn't have enough material to fill a set, so they re...

Re: So...how about a Texas gathering?

I've never been to a Rick confluence, but I've met quite a few Forumites at guitar shows in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. This year we'll be having the Dallas Guitar Show on April 18-20 and the Arlington Vintage Guitar Show on October 18-19. At the last Dallas show we had Forumites from all over inclu...

Re: Represently speaking

Brian: I also graduated high school in '79. As far as I'm concerned that allowed me to see the entire punk movement first hand. I recall reading about the Sex Pistols in '76 when I was 15 or 16, before I found a copy of 'Pretty Vacant/Submission' in a local record shop. Although The Ramones already ...

Re: Represently speaking

I vote for 'Sonic Reducer' by The Dead Boys. Their 'Young, Loud and Snotty' album was one of my first punk purchases in 1977 along with 'Never Mind The ...' and 'Rocket To Russia'. Although I liked them all, The Sex Pistols' sound was like sloppy glam and The Ramones' was basically fast surf with bu...

Re: 1,000,001th time... How long to wait?

With respect to temperature and guitar finishes, I think it's best to avoid any exposure to extremely cold temperatures. Your finish may survive if the temperature change (up or down) is slow enough. I like to think that keeping guitars in their cases helps to slow down any environmental changes. It...

Re: 1,000,001th time... How long to wait?

Slightly off-topic, but I had a somewhat similar experience. I bought a Gretsch Rancher acoustic on eBay. It was very well-packed in a hardshell case that was bubble-wrapped inside a cardboard box. The case didn't permit any motion, the box didn't have any signs of damage, the weather was mild, and ...
