Re: '83 4003 Truss Rod Spacer

Better to sand off finishes than to use a chemical stripper. Binding and position markers are plastic. Granted, this was 50 years ago, but I removed the finish from my old '72 with Zip Strip, and it ate into the binding and (gasp) the crushed-pearl position markers! When I realized that was happenin...

Re: RIC Wood Sourcing

Some of the first model 4000 basses were made with mahogany, but construction switched to maple and walnut as they were easier to work with. Check for more information in the book. :)

Re: 4001S or modded 4000?

It looks to be an original "4001S" - in the "set neck" days, the single-pickup 4000 and the 4001S had the same chassis. Everything was the same except for the routing for the "neck" pickup and the additional controls. It is possible that a chassis with the additional ro...

Re: 4003fl with shark fins

Can't tell you about value, but to me it looks like a custom fingerboard. The wood is not standard for the time period and the position markers look too bright. Still, once in a while, a factory experiment or employee special project escapes into the wild!

Thanks, folks. It's hard to believe it has been ten years since the first edition came out - six years since the second!

Re: Were any 4003SFL ever made?

Hey, Joey! No, that one belongs (or belonged maybe) to Bill Henshell. Gary's is the fretless set-neck 4000, also in the book.

You'll find a photo of one in my book (page 75 of the first edition, page 77 of the second edition), along with fretless examples of several different models.

Re: 10 years ago!

Yeah, that's possible. I'm not interested in "selling" it though - I'm not in it to make money and don't want to be bothered with the having to do "business" or pay/avoid taxes or anything like that. In any situation, I'd have to get in the mood to do it, and I'm not "there&...

The "book" says: "In 1975, the neck pickup was relocatated a half inch farther from the fingerboard to take advantage of a harmonic node there." 8)

Re: 10 years ago!

And the AC Signature, and the 4005XC, and the new 4005 and . . . . The problem with doing a book is that it becomes obsolete the minute it is published. As soon as I was done with the Second Edition, RIC announced the new five-stringer. I might consider doing new updates with digital pages that inte...

Boy, time flies! It was ten years ago that my book, "The Rickenbacker Electric Bass - 50 Years as Rock's Bottom" was first published! A lot has happened since then: A second, enlarged edition was published in 2017, I sold off all of my Ricks, fought off cancer, and shifted my life's work o...

Re: Rickenbacker 100year Anniversary Model

You'd have to say goodbye to the contours on the "top" (front") as they did on the 4004LK!
