If your guy is in Aurora and needs a bass box ask him to check Hix Music at the Fox Valley Mall. They are a great place to deal with.

Unfortunatly I don't live in Illinois any more.

I'd hate to rain on anyones parade, but I wouldn't buy a 4005 even if it were priced less than a 4003. On the other hand I would go for a 4001 c64 or v63 with the proper headstock orientation. (right-side up)

I also play an S, an '81 4003 and the only thing I don't like about it is the truss rod system, and the fat upper horn. I actually like the pickup cover and have replaced it on a few Ricks I've had.

Maybe one of them is a 4001PMC. I've heard rumors of such.

One of the headstocks is upside-down, the other not.

As I see it the 4001c64 is not a "S" bass, it is a "C Series" bass, those being modeled after a certian famous pop groups guitars.

A true "S" bass, or re-issue "S" bass would have a proper right side up headstock.

Check each pickup individually, switch up and switch down, and see if both tones work on shen a single pickup is used. On my 4003 the pickups couldnt be selected individually because of a wiring fault at the selecter switch. And also make sure you are not using a standard 1/4 guitar cord in the Ric ...

That can't be right. I had a similar problem with my 4003S. Check all the wiring against a schematic, and pay special attention to grounding.
