Re: Rick 650 New Controls & Pickups

I never said that I run them full up all the time. When I use the neck pickup alone I tend to roll down the tone. With the bridge pickup it is full up.

The vol pot I use to make some volume adjustments if needed. I find that I have plenty of control - YMMV.

Re: Rick 650 New Controls & Pickups

On the contrary the guitar is very bright and and punchy. Not dull at all. Similar to the SD JB & Jazz pickups that were in it. The tone control has a wider range of roll off before getting into the mud sound as compared to my other humbuckers with 500k pots. As to the .047 cap, I have used them...

Rick 650 New Controls & Pickups

Back in 2008 I modded my 650D Dakota and put a set of colorful Seymour Duncans in it. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e5/aoresteen/Rickenbacker%20650%20Dakota/650SDPups.jpg I even swapped the chrome pick guard for a wood one but eventually went back with the factory chrome one. http://i36.photobuc...

Re: Tuning Issues with my 420 MG

Thanks Scott. I'll get a set of the Kluson Tonepros. I am using GHS Brit-Flats on my 420 but I buy them in individual strings to get the gauges I use. I use a wound 3rd on my Epi Dot (.012s) & two Squier solid body Jazz guitars (.011s) http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e5/aoresteen/Epi%20Dot/dot...

Tuning Issues with my 420 MG

I'm playing my 1971 MG 420 again and there are a couple of tuning issues with. First two of the Klusons are slipping a lot and the guitar goes out of tune. I tune up but by the end of a song they are flat again. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e5/aoresteen/Rickenbacker%20420/420%20tuners_zpsdwluqg...

Re: New Guitar Day !

Congrats! Nice guitars. I have a '71 420 MG. Yours is in fact a 420 given the 1967 date. Prior to 1965 it would have been a 425. In 1965 they added a tremolo to the 425 and renamed the version without the tremolo the 420. The 420 was my first decent guitar - I bought a 1968 MG version in Oct 1970. L...

620-12 Modded Controls

I love my 620-12 Mapleglo w/black hardware. It's a 1989 that I've owned since Jan 2000. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e5/aoresteen/Rickenbacker%20620-12/rick%2062012_zps8mjq4uj7.jpg One thing that I have never been comfortable with are the separate vol/tone & blend controls. Over the last 6 ...

Re: Rickenbacker 420 Mods - Should I?

Thanks all! Well, for now the router is safely back in it's case. I'm going to use my 1995 Epiphone S-310 that I call "The Rickster" instead of modding the 420. She has a Ric humbucker at the bridge, a vintage toaster in the middle with a '99 Epiphone mini-bucker at the neck. http://i36.ph...

Re: Rickenbacker 420 Mods - Should I?

Leave it be and purchase a 600-series guitar. You can modify a new guitar easily and without stigma because they are still being made. Please don't change the 420. And the only pictures I've ever seen of George playing his 420 (which was originally called a 425, in spite of having no vibrato) was w...

Rickenbacker 420 Mods - Should I?

I have a 1971 Mapleglo Ric 420. The pick guard needs replacement due to cracks in it. Easy enough - I'll send it to Pick Guardian and Tony will make a new one. Here's my dilemma. I bought this 420 as the 420 Mapleglo was my first decent guitar that I got as a Senior in HS back 1970. I hacked up my f...

Re: Nut material on 650 Dakota

Thanks all. The high E string is a bit too close to the edge of the fretboard. I can re-cut and fill to move it in a bit but I was considering just replacing it. Hence the questions on material.

What's the opinion on changing the nut to bone?

Nut material on 650 Dakota

The nut on my 2002 650D Dakota is made of what looks like black plastic. Does anyone know exactly what it is?

Has anyone changed a 650 nut to bone or Tusk? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: Looking for my lost 420

Well I guess that it could have been worse :) No, I don't have any record of the serial number. Things like serial numbers were not too important to when I was 22 years. At least I still have my 1959 Grestch Duo Jet that I got from a pawn shop in 1973 for $10. Here I am playing the 420 in 1973 or so...

Looking for my lost 420

Around Oct 1970 I bought a used Rickenbacker 420 mapleglo from Patti Music in Madison WI for $125 as I recall. I was in senior in High School then and kept the guitar until I traded it in to either Ray Ketner Music or Ward Brodt Music Madison WI in 1975 for a '73 Les Paul Deluxe cherry sunburst. As ...
