Re: Never too late?

You are never too old to do what you enjoy, and it ain't up to anyone else to tell you otherwise. Interesting case in point: new record by a band I have been listening to for twenty years. Great album--much confidence and an appropriate amount of swagger. Twenty years ago, they were sloppy, and full...

Re: Practice Amp Suggestions?

A little battery-powered Pignose combined with a POD xt gives me a ton of flexibility that travels well. Plus you get connectivity for digital recording, etc. Both are readily available used for cheap.

Re: Classic R.E.M.

+1 for Fables--my favorite REM record, but not by much over the rest of the early ones. "kohoutek" came up on the iPod on the way to work this morning--WHAT a song that is! Definitely my favorite band for Murmur through Green years, but then I (and they) drifted off to other things...those...

Re: Weirdest punk/alternative band?

I'd have to call it a tie between Journey and the Little River Band. And Supertramp.

Re: A "Fire"-storm of Controversy

Yet my Fireglo is above all others! It bounds from the earth, as if his entrails were hairs; le cheval volant, the Pegasus, chez les narines de feu! When I strum him, I soar, I am a hawk: he chimes the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest buzz of his fret is more musical than the pipe...

Re: British vs American?

Great perspectives on American punk in the book "Our Band Could be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground, 1981-1991" by Michael Azerrad--highly recommended. I think a good word for what has driven a lot of American punk is "disaffected". With societal norms, schoo...

Re: My new Gibson Telecaster

Mac MacCauhgey of Superchunk, and Portastatic, has always been a big Marauder guy. One of my favorite rock guitar solo sounds--big screaming lead tone, somewhat similar to J. Mascis Jazzmaster stuff:

Re: Peavey Buying Gibson?

I just don't see Slash switching to a T-60...

...anybody remember the "WHY?" advertisement, circa 1980, for this guitar? It showed a Strat, T-60, and LP, side by side, full page, with MSRPs underneath. I think the Strat & LP were around $600, and the Peavey was ~$250.

Re: The SpongeTones

I purchased "(My Girl) Maryanne" after it popped up frequently on one of my Pandora stations (Pleasant Valley Sunday as the seed). I would have guessed this was circa 1965. Terrific song--sounds like I need some more...

+1 on Back from the Grave series.

A great collection is "A History of Garage and Frat Bands in Memphis 1960-75", particularly Volume 1. Some really great stuff there--on Shangri-La Records at http://www.shangri.com/garage.html.
