Sorry; haven't checked the thread for a while.
I have the number '4' on the scratch plate for a couple of reasons:
It's my fourth Rick.
My first, a mid 70s burgundy 4001 was stolen from a recording studio in Denmark street in 1993.
My second was a 72 checker binding natural finish, as was my third ...

Re: Which pre-amp/DI stomp box do you use with your Ric bass?
I used to run a Sans Amp straight into my Harkt System (which I ran flat) back in the 90s.
I'm moving to IEMs which I intend to run from the same Sans Amp - built to last.

Re: Who uses the damper?
Yes, often, especially experimenting with recording; good for 'double bass' or fretless effect as well as note muting.
Live sometimes just on the E and strings - raises the action though, and tuning obviously.
I replaced the rubber mute with a felt one on my current Rick, below- much better.

Where was it damaged ? Anything like on mine? Hacksaw marks by the jack or cracks along the body ?

Re: '64' RM199 rebuild continued, detective work.... (seeking 64 jack plate).
'Back in the summer of 1976 I went from Manchester to Rhodes Music on Denmark St to check out an RM1999. At the time these 60s basses cropped up from time to time in the for sale and music shop ads in the back of the Melody Maker and were practically always described as “60s dot neck Rickenbacker ...

Re: '64' RM199 rebuild continued, detective work.... (seeking 64 jack plate).
Any knowledge on the scratch plate; painted white when I got the bass.
Looks copper (possibly brass), possibly to look like a Lemmy bass .. it's made well, not sharp edges or dodgy curves; everything lines up.
Ive seen plastic plates with copper backing and anodised brass Fender style plates ...

Yes; I read about it on this site.teeder wrote: Wed Jan 10, 2024 9:27 amA long time member of this forum owns that bass. Though, I haven't seen him post in a long time.corduroyboy wrote: Wed Jan 10, 2024 5:50 am (I read somewhere that a bassist for the Bee Gees did this live; the paint eventually wore thin on the horn and he repainted his Rick white as a result).

Re: Why do RICs click? RIC Newbie
My Rick is fairly loud acoustically; but:
when 'noodling' I sometimes rest my chin on the upper horn - the better to hear and feel an accurate acoustic tone; (I read somewhere that a bassist for the Bee Gees did this live; the paint eventually wore thin on the horn and he repainted his Rick white as ...

Re: '64' RM199 rebuild continued, detective work.... (seeking 64 jack plate).
I an considering replacing with a blank plate - just not sure if that makes the dating more confusing.
I disagree with this practice, it only leads to future confusion (and even deception) years down the line. Think years after we’re gone, this stuff will still be around.
Putting a ‘64 era ...

Re: '64' RM199 rebuild continued, detective work.... (seeking 64 jack plate).
Finally, somebody suggested in my original thread that I replace the 73 jack plate with a 64; can anyone help with that please?

Re: '64' RM199 rebuild continued, detective work.... (seeking 64 jack plate).
I've never see another Rick with the lug on the heel; Lemmy always did. Anyone ?
I did that to one of mine for a while. Pretty much because of Lemmy.
Its not a good idea, it makes the guitar seriously neck heavy with the accompanying dive issue. Also, it makes it lean forward, away from your ...

'64' RM199 rebuild continued, detective work.... (seeking 64 jack plate).
This is a follow-up on my post from 2019, below; I dismantled and rebuilt what turned out to be (probably) a 64 RM1999.

I've toured, recorded it and loved it, since my rebuild.

Panic over..
All fixed with the help of a Rick friendly tech.
Yes, it had been rewired somewhere down the line.
Two points re-soldered correctly to stereo jack, other two to the treb volume.

...and then this happend!
Having noticed a random wire sprouting from inside the jack plate wiring (the neck pup cut-out, so I investigated under the scratch plate) I wrongly assumed that it had detached from some solder spotting the copper tape east of the treble volume pot. My soldering made things worse (the bridge pup ...
