Re: Ready to start on the Wreckenbacker

Out of curiosity, did you tape just the binding on the sides of the fretboard or to the edge of the fretboard as the factory does? It is had to tell from the pics. It is looking good from what I see on the monitor.

JB Weld and PC7 are other options.

Re: 1965 4001 needs a bit of TLC

The problem with cast aluminum is there may be impurities in the metal. TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding would be the best option IMO. You would need to find a welder with a small TIG torch. I know of a few welders that could do this but haven't seen them since I retired over 5 years ago. I can TIG ...

Re: Something special about Rickenbacker...

Gibson made some acoustics (I think in the eighties) in Japan between the closing of Kalamazoo and the purchase of Flatiron. Those all bore the Orville name. I looked this up in an old Musicians' Equipment Guide (summer '87). This is something I should have done before my original post. The guitars...

Re: Something special about Rickenbacker...

I was going to say they made guitars out of the USA. But I'm not sure that's true for Gibson or Martin. Is there a non-USA guitar with Gibson or Martin on the headstock? (Orville by Gibson, Sigma by Martin are different brands...) Martin currently makes guitars in Mexico with the Martin Headstock a...

I'd be inclined to put the right parts on and leave the finish. You can always refinish it at a later date but once done you can never go back.

By the way, did your "guest" get a free room for the night.

Re: The Book is alive!

A good friend stopped by with his copy yesterday. He went home without it.   So far I love what I see. Great layout. Tons of great info and pictures, plus now I truly understand a few things that I didn't before, that differentiates a couple of the models. Well worth the effort Paul....

Re: difference between neck and bridge pickup

The pole spacing is narrower on the neck pickup and wider at the bridge. With the wider string spacing of a 650, using two bridge pickups may be a better choice. I would measure the sting spacing at each pickup location and compare to the pickups to make that determination.

What Rod, Joshua and John said. IMO only, of course. The old style rods once set properly virtually never go out of adjustment. +1 I believe that is because the old style rods react against them selves. You set them to react against a certain tension and they stay there. They have the same co-effic...
