I had to replace a fretboard on a '76 4001 with a Brazilian rosewood board with dot inlays once, because Ric would not sell fretboards or inlay materials. My guess also,is that unless documented, the work is not factory Ric.

Thanks Big g. That makes sense that the smaller frets are more precise. Do any of your basses have flatwound strings?

Peter, thanks for the reply. The truss rods are fine and the neck seems OK. I agree, with flatwound strings, Fret wear should not be an issue. Had the original owner of this bass used flatwounds, I would not have to completely refret the instrument. In all my years of repairing instruments, I have ...

Wow! No reply, I can't believe it. Isn't there anyone out there that has played one of those old Gibson basses with the wide low frets or any of the classic modern basses like Alembic or Pedula with jumbo frets? I'm wondering if there is an advantage to small frets buried in finish? True smaller ...

New frets on my 4001

I recently acquired a 1973 4001. It was so well played that even the last fret was badly worn, so I plan to completely refret it. I usualy use Pyramid flatwounds and was thinking of refreting it with wider jumbo fretwire. What do you think?

Hi John, the old '65 twelve is doing great! It sings me to sleep almost every night. As a matter of fact, I think I'll go play it right now.

Right now I'm looking at the body of a 1964 360-12 with the back off. You can clearly see how the inside was routed out and how the neck fits into the neck pocket as well as the thinner top and the old style braces. I will try to get someone to take some pictures of the inside if any one is ...

Hi Jeffrey,
Thanks for the welcome! Franklin is about 1 1/2 hours north of me. I do build instruments. Guitars, banjos, but my mandolins are my real claim to fame if I have one. I make "F" style mandolins mainly.
