Topic: Vintage 325's have a larger body?

I recall that my friends '86 320 had a control plate that was actually slightly over the edge of the guitar. I assumed the plate was too large and we were going to make a new one - however when I compared it to my '90 320 I found that the plate was correct. The guitar body was undersized !

Joe, the last RM1996 in my private data with a 2 o'clock soundhole is from April '64 (discounting greg's). I've paid particular attention to this point in my records too. The May 1996's I have on record so far(5 units) all have 1 o'clock sound holes. I have 30 units for 1964 so far - there's a lot m...

I can add that the bodysize of my '64 Rose Morris 325 is larger than 2 other recent 320's I've compared it too. Larger to the extent that I really had to push to get the '64 into the moulded case of an '86 320 that a friend owns. The other point to note is that the control plate for the '64 is large...

You're makin me drool Joe. Wish I could have been shown around the old Ric factory like that. How amazing to see all that old tooling, parts, etc - still in existance. Incidentally, what did you guys think of the fact that John Hall's '58 325 brown burst has a serial number several prior to Lennon's...

Hi Joe, Yes that '67 325 of Greg's is a tricky one to work out. I wonder if it could be an old body that turned up - perhaps these alleged pre-made bodies were all unrouted in the pickup positions? The question of the heels may not be a huge issue. Seeing as the headstock concept had undergone a rev...

Thanks Larry. That's exactly what I was wondering about. It really makes the idea about existing bodies being used on early '64 production seem more likely. And as Peter also noted, it wasn't just a matter of changing the angle of the opening either. The 1 o'clocks have a different shaped hole. Now ...

Hi Larry, Yes can follow your line of reasoning here and it stacks up pretty well to me. I want to ask you about the body thickness though. The thickest bodies were the '58 325's right?, then I understand that the thickness went down a little for the '59 - '61 units. Then in '64 the body thickness w...

According to my data, Rickenbacker changed over from 2 o'clock to 1 o'clock soundholes in April or perhaps early May of 1964. The last known example of a 2 o'clock soundhole is found on the modified and refinished Rose Morris 1996 sold from Guitar Broker this year. It was an April '64. The next know...

Well - didn't mean to go rufflin feathers on my second day here. It was interesting that the McGuinn 325 appears to have surfaced again as a result of work for the 325 Connection. It had been said for years by many, that Mcguinns 325 was a twin of Lennon's 325/12. I was very curious about that so I ...

I'd hazard a guess that there are no other 325's with the 'Byrd' wiring. Seeing as Roger regarded the process as a failure and handed the 325 over to his young boys to play with. If you have a look at the excellent closeups on Bjorn's site you can see that the mods were actually fairly roughly done....

Yikes! This is a difficult one - and I got myself in real hot water over this question of maple or alder construction in recent times. Let's just say the jury is still out on this question - but there are examples of capri's made of both maple and alder.

Hi, and thanks for the warm welcome. I really want to say from the outset that I don't regard myself as the 325 authority. There are many persons who know a great deal more than me about 325's and Rics in general. I'm fortunate enough to have had a lot of help from these persons in putting together ...
