Re: 1972 bridge fits later 4001?

I hate to open this particular can of worms, but the Hipshot bridge is not only fugly, it has other issues (wobbly saddles, poor break angle). Easier hand muting is its only benefit. IMO, YMMV. Fugly is in the eye of the beholder. No wobbly saddles on the one on my 4000, and the break angle seems n...

...easier on the back than my old AC50. Did you ever try the AC50 for upright? Some good sounds in there! I will have to give it a try. I guess if I'm going to break my back with the upright, the AC50 won't do much more damage! My general feel is that the AC50 has a particular signature s...

Hello to Betty

After a long period of mourning for Griffin, we have decided to adopt another dog. As fortune would have it, Griffin's great-great-great-niece had a litter of puppies eight weeks ago, and we were in the right place at the right time to get our name onto the list. We are picking "Betty" up ...

+1. Works very well with uprights too, and easier on the back than my old AC50.

Re: Hello from me and my RM1999

IMHO the RIHS pups look great but don't reproduce the vintage tone one might expect. The Lollar HS pups are much better in this regard.

Also, like the original HS, the Lollars are wound to a low dc resistance, so the output should be a better match to your neck toaster than the RIHS.

Re: A 4003 for my different uses?

Given modern FOH and studio technology, failure to get a specific tone from a decent bass of any make indicates that the sound engineer is unimaginative. Sadly, as unimaginative sound engineers seem to be pretty common, it is usually up to musicians to fill the expertise gap by being able to provide...

...On the 4004Cii, I find the neck pickup almost useless on its own. Just doesn't give me a sound I like, which I think is likely the position... Here is a recording of the neck pickup in my Jetglo 4004L. 1230.MP3 That sounds very much like the neck toaster on a vintage 4001 I once had the privileg...

Re: Fretless 4001: intonation/setup issue, need help

Lightbulb moment!!!!! With a fretted bass, the note reference point is at the top of the fret, which is around 1mm off the fingerboard. When you remove the frets from a bass, you drop the reference point down to the board. Assuming the nut slots have not been changed, this will result in the ...

Re: Fretless 4001: intonation/setup issue, need help

I've been mulling this over and I'm very confused - it looks like the bass is perfectly in tune at the octave position, and is by all accounts in tune with the open string, but is sharp in between (hence the need to finger the notes well behind the lines). Given the size of the error up the neck, I ...

Re: Fretless 4001: intonation/setup issue, need help

So, the correct position would be somewhere between these two positions, adjusting it to how thick and stiff the string is; making sure that the "point of separation" between the string and the fretboard lies on the fretline? That's pretty much it. There may be a tiny allowance for finger...

Re: Fretless 4001: intonation/setup issue, need help

If you place your finger directly over the fret line, the string will actually be in contact with the fingerboard a little further down the fingerboard towards the bridge, making the note slightly sharp. You need to move your finger a little towards the nut - the exact spot will differ from person t...
