Re: Best Method For Cleaning Ric Volume And Tone Controls?

Try rotating the pot knobs through their entire range,
back & forth, back & forth ... as many times as it takes.

Non-invasive, and it usually works.

Re: 480 question

Both my '73 and '81 Burgandyglo 480's have Kluson tuners.

I think the 481's may have come with Grover's back then.

Re: Anyone tried slide on a ric?

I've played slide on my 480 for years,
but I just love my 650D for slide these days.

Yep, my 480 fits like a glove. And, we both have Burgundyglo !!! (see other thread on BG) This guitar cuts through a mix live and responds nicely to my pick dynamics and vol/tone control use. I had the chance to play it briefly thru a newer Vox AC30 stack? and it sounded great - nice amp, but I pref...

Agree with all that Peter says about the 480. My '81 just screams through my cranked Deluxe Reverb RI, jangles sweetly through my Super Reverb, and never fails to impress players and non-players alike - well, I'm pretty sure it's the guitar doing the impressing LOL.

If you have a spare 12AT7 tube, swap it with the reverb driver tube in V3. If still humming, swap a spare with the 12AX7 in V4. If still humming, at least you know the reverb tubes aren't the problem.

Yet another way to look at it. D mixo = G ionian = C lydian and on and on and on ... "Sweet Home Alabama" = D C G D = D F# A C = C E G G = G B D So... D E F# G A B C are the chords' tones in "SHA". Pick a scale or mode ( see above) that covers those tones and LISTEN to the change...

The hi-gains on my '81 480 are fairly well balanced volume-wise. I seem to remember that the bass HG on my '73 480 was significantly stronger than the bridge though. Maybe it's a time period thing. The '73 had screw tops, the '81 button tops.

Totally agree on the "twang" factor. ;0

I rarely fail to get some compliment on the looks of my 480 (and on the sound !). Though one time somebody viewing us through a security camera at a rehearsal asked why that band has 2 bass players !

And don't forget the cresting wave headstock - it lends a certain flair to the overall look.

Real beauty, Peter - burgundyglo is by far my favorite Rick color. Looks exactly like the two 480's I've owned since 1974. My 1st one (Ser# MD-368)was stolen in '82; I went right out and ordered a new one. Both were my only electric guitar from 1974 thru 2002. Excellent points about an optimally set...
