I got a new Eden N15s 1x15 combo w/ effects loop & DI for under 500 bucks. It sounds great, and I've used it to play smallish rooms with no trouble at all. The DI sounds great through a house PA and it's fairly light. The Eden folks are great about answering questions on their forum, too.

The band I play with wanted me to get an American-made P or J bass. They are Fender guys, at least in part, and used to all the chatter about how American Fenders are the standard, we want that classic tone, etc. I was playing with probably the crappiest rig to ever hit the stage for a long while ...
