Re: 1981 3-pickup factory wiring?
In the 1970's and 1980's, Rickenbacker went through a phase of trying to get maximum tonal contrast between the bridge and neck pickups. This meant they overwound the neck pickup and underwound the bridge pickup as you describe, with the resulting tone you describe.
Remember it is not just the ...

Re: 1981 3-pickup factory wiring?
Actually, I would suggest the John Lennon mod: he simply detached the middle pickup from the wiring. I think you will find the bridge pickup has better tone that way by itself, as the older toasters (pre-5-knob) were only wound to @ 5.5 kohms' worth of wire to begin with, and you get rid of the ...

Re: 1981 3-pickup factory wiring?
I must confess I was having a hard time explaining my question and I think you guys are actually both saying the same thing but responding to different parts of my first post where I wasn't entirely clear so you think you're disagreeing but actually aren't!

Re: 1981 3-pickup factory wiring?
Thanks - yeah that's how I thought it should be. Although the wiring in mine does kinda look like a factory wiring job.
Interestingly, I found one other 320 - from 1978 - on youtube, that sounds like it's wired up the same way as mine:

1981 3-pickup factory wiring?
Hi
I recently got a good deal on a slightly beat up looking 320 that is dated to November 1981 according to the serial. Apart from the tuners which have been swapped out for schallers (the evidence of klusons having been there originally is clearly visible), the guitar seems all original, and is in ...

Re: 30 year old guitar, stuck bridge saddles
^You were right!
This was exactly the problem with my bridge - the threaded holes in the saddles didn't quite line up with the holes in the bridge. I bought a full set of new screws and had trouble installing them. In the end, I had to file the holes in the bridge 'chassis' open a little to make ...

Re: 30 year old guitar, stuck bridge saddles
Here’s a pic of my 350v63 bridge fitted with the Rickysounds screws/nuts
That bridge pickup isn't quite as close to the bridge as it is on pretty much any post-'84 330 or 360.
Not my guitar, but this how small of a gap between the bridge and the pickup I'm dealing with:

Re: 30 year old guitar, stuck bridge saddles
“Like you implied, a slotted screw head would be easier to deal with. Here's an example; a "combo" screw that accommodates both slot and Phillips screw drivers (and it's stainless steel). Maybe there's a similar screw in the UK.“

Re: 30 year old guitar, stuck bridge saddles
So far, so good. Maybe order a couple of extra screws while you're at it, just in case you lose one or one gets damaged; shipping charges are killer nowadays.
Luckily I'm in the UK so the shipping charges are just the standard postal rate here :D
It might be worth seeing if I have a nearly ...

Re: 30 year old guitar, stuck bridge saddles
Thanks for the replies so far - I got around to cleaning/lubricating everything and that's helped to loosen everything up.
the G saddle hex slot was slightly rounded out and the B string saddle was quite severely so, after lubricating it I could just about get the G saddle screw to turn and pull ...

30 year old guitar, stuck bridge saddles
Hi
I recently purchased a '95 330JG - and I'm having a minor issue with adjusting the intonation - the G and B string saddle adjustment screws are completely stuck, to the point where the hex key just slips out of the adjustment slot in the screw head if I apply any serious torque. The others are ...

early 80s 360/12 grover tuners?
Hi
Does anyone know if the 360/12 ever shipped from the factory with grover tuners in the early 1980s?
I have seen a 360/12 on a private sale that appears to be from the early 80s, all the details match up to other photos of unmodded, stock 360/12s from around 1981-83 (shiny black topped hi-gains ...

Re: 6-saddle vs 12-saddle sound
It's hard to argue with the results.
I have an original blackguard '54 Tele and I can't imagine wanting more out of a Telecaster than that. No matter how scientifically "perfect" a six-saddle bridge would make it.
Truthfully there is no such thing as scientifically "perfect" intonation, because ...

Re: Hi-Gain changes
I have two late 80’s Ric 360’s (1986) with hi-gains and the neck in both are about 12.5k and the bridge pickups are around 6.5k. They also have vintage valued pots. My understanding is the hi-gains were this way until 1992 or 1994 (not sure exactly). After that both the neck and bridge had the ...
