Re: Vintage Fender amp and grounding? Need help!
Any amp can be modified to have proper 3 wire grounding and take out the 'death cap', except the type of amps that are wired directly to the mains with no power transformer such as some Silvertone guitar and amp combinations for example. That isn't to say that all vintage Silvertones are something t...

Re: 220 pickups
The most aggressive sounding pickups (in a good way) on any Rick bass I've owned were HB-2s on my old 2030GF. 2030GF-1200_0652.jpg 2030GF-1200_0662.jpg I've never played one of the 200 series basses with those pickups but given the way those pickups sound I've always thought they would sound great ...

Re: Good Speaker Reconing Shop
I've had great luck with Ted Weber's reconing services. They reconed a 1956 Jensen P12R a decade ago that I have from my 1956 tweed deluxe and did a great job. It is still working well. https://www.tedweber.com/recone-services/ Although it looks like they can't recone any smooth cone speakers like a...

Re: 220 pickups
The 200 series guitars/basses were single coil up to around 1988-1989 when they switched to the HB2 pickup. This pickup is the same as the HB-1 except for how it mounts to the instrument. The early HB-2's were slightly less winds than the later ones, and weren't made as well as far as protection of ...

Re: 200 Series Pickups
I'd like to find one of those 2000 series basses one day! I've never seen one in person. To me the HB2 does some of what the hi-gain does, but it is more powerful and midrangey at the same time. It is as powerful as some Seymour Duncan Full Shred pickups I have on another guitar, but due to the smal...

Re: NGD: 1994 Rickenbacker 260 El Dorado
Nice guitar! Don't see those too often. Yours looks to be in really nice shape too. I have a 1989 230 that I refinished in Blue Boy. I discovered while doing all of that work the earlier HB2 pickups are a little weaker than the later ones like yours with the embossed logo on the pickup. I personally...

Sounds great! I bet you'll enjoy it a lot! I've got a pre-lawsuit one that I need to install in a bass. One of these days....squirebass wrote: ↑Sun May 08, 2022 10:27 pm Thanks Greg, I might just do that, but I placed an order for one about a week or so ago, and its just now shipped!

Re: Lollar Horseshoe pickups -- Any tendency to de-gauss?
I haven't heard of them degaussing as much as the vintage RIC horseshoes. I think the pre-lawsuit design of Lollar's horseshoe might degauss a bit more readily than the more recent one, but to be honest I would suggest to just call and ask Jason Lollar yourself. He's an great guy and he'll tell you ...

Re: Do these readings mean my HB1 neck pickup is dead?
The HB1 and HB2 are epoxied inside the cover so they are pretty much non-repairable. It is odd that it is reading open. There is a circuit board on the bottom where each of the 4 coil wires solder in. On the early HB2's there is a small gap between the epoxy and the circuit board and the wires can g...

Thanks Greg, this the missing piece of the puzzle, thanks for sharing this info! And all laws of nature are applicable again ;-) Sure interested in having a look at the schematic some day, not in a hurry, glad already this info came around. I'll PM you in a few months, thanks already. And interesti...

Re: 230 Hamburg and 250 El Dorado 'passive boost'
I have a 1989 230 and I talked to John Hall through email maybe 10 yeas ago about it because I was refinishing the guitar and had some questions about it and about the pickups and the circuit in general. Here is some of what he said about it. In the Rickenbacker sales brochure it talks about a semi-...

Re: question about Capri's
My Capri 360 OS was alder. It had the original finish removed, so I didn't see it in its original form. Knobs are not original. To my ear, the toaster pickups on this were unlike current toasters. Very, very hot and bright. With treble dialed all the way up they were sizzling. Slim neck profile. [s...

Re: And in the end ...
I've still got 3 Rickenbackers, and one copy I made for myself. I've sold two RICs in my lifetime. Still have: BBR 350V63 with toasters BBR 330/12 with toasters 1989 230 - my first guitar, originally red, but black over the top when I got it used. Refinished in Blue Boy in 2007. Will never sell. Sol...

Re: fake horseshoe pickups?
RIC Toasters and Horseshoe pickups are indeed trademarked. But with the Horseshoe at least there is some legal grey area there since that design was patented in the 30's and you can't trademark a design that was patented. I believe RIC and Lollar settled out of court and Lollar can still make his h...
