Re: what are 4005s like? (really)

JPS:

I'm comparing it to a '78 4001. Having made the original statement, I put a set of calipers on both necks just to be sure its not my imagination. My 66 4005 is 2.19 inches at the 12th fret, the 4001 is 2.09 - only a tenth of an inch difference! However it FEELS wider......

Re: what are 4005s like? (really)

I've got a 66' 4005. I'd note the following

[1] The difference in sound between the two pickups is more exaggerated than on the 4001. The Treble is VERY treble ( with the cap in series) , and the bass VERY bass.

[2] It doesn't' "growl" quite as much as a 4001. Blending the two pickups, to my ears ...

Re: Re-Recording bass - how do you do it??

I have sometimes noticed the musicians trying to overdub a previously live part will drag just a little. I always put it down to reduced adrenalin compared to the live cut, or some version of the "click track" effect (where drummers will lag or lead because they can't her the click when they're ...

Re: Mixed Feelings

"I no longer wish to keep it. I have no wish to own an instrument that is worth such an obscene amount of money as it seems to be from the offer I have just received. I simply wouldn't know what to do with it, - too valuable to risk damaging it. I was much happier with it when I didn't know what it ...

Re: Trying to punk rock my 4003

My son really wants me using the 4003 for our group. Here's my issues after the first rehearsal with it...The pickups are just not strong enough. I need a super hot bridge pickup. Also, the E string seems to have a huge drop off in volume. Right now the bass is strung with flats (they have purple ...

Look for such things as the "Rickenbacker black gibson Electric Guitar"
I rather like the "wood color" model 330 that appears to have been modeled after a longhorn steer

Re: When to change Flats

On the basses I have with flats I only change them of the intonation goes out, and that appears to be mostly due to wear. I have a 65' fender P that the owner apparently never played after 68, according to his son who inherited the bass with the original flats still on it (and swapped it with me for ...

Re: It's A Mod Mod Mod Mod World!

This may be a bit extreme for the purists, (but i do also own a stock 4001). I didn't do this myself, the name of a San Diego custom shop is in the control cavity. I bought this one at a local pawn shop! I do like the replacement quilted maple top, Active EMG's and w/b/w binding. the instrument ...

Re: Did Rics decline in the 70's....?

My own personal experience/opinion is that the decline in the quality of American manufactured instruments after 1970 is a somewhat overrated piece of conventional wisdom. I have had the good fortune to own numerous instruments from both decades, and my own experience is that the variations between ...
