I've found the Ampeg SVP preamp to be quite good for gigging, but a bit noisy for recording (the tubes in mine are due for replacement, so that could be the problem).

I'd second the recommendation for Gary Brawer (or is it Brauer?). He did fine work on my '68 4001. Not cheap, not quick, but high quality.

I developed a patch of hair on my right wrist that isn't matched on my left wrist, as a result of the abrasion caused by rubbing against the binding. (insert hairy-palms joke)

The bass player in the Joy Division tribute band I'm in frequently gets complaints because he plays with his fingers (completely un-like Peter Hook). I keep telling him that he needs to learn how to play with a pick! My opinion is that the "feel" of the song (or the band) should probably d...

Just to back up what others have said, I tried Rotosounds but found the same consistency/string breaking problems that others have had. And the Markley Steel Blues have been my preferred string, EXCEPT that they don't come in 45-65-85-105 sets, so I've had to buy mismatched sets or special-order ind...

I think that was standard advice in those days on "how to write a hit". I believe Ray Davies mentioned being given that advice, as you can see in early Kinks titles: YOU really got ME YOU do something to ME YOU still want ME I took MY baby home I need YOU When I see that girl of MINE etc.

I play keyboard/synth/rhythm guitar in this Joy Division tribute band, but our bassist plays a recent 4003 (and I'm planning on making the singer/guitarist use my 360/12 the next time we do "Love Will Tear Us Apart" since that's what Bernard uses these days when New Order play it). http://...

I don't hear any 12-string on the original Tomorrow album, but there definitely is on the version of "Why" included as a bonus track on the CD. Purely rhythm; the (stinging!) lead is played on a 6-string (presumably the ES-175).

Same era as the Billy Preston song (early 80s), "Thanks John (Rock On)" by The Flamin' Groovies (Cyril Jordan).

(I love the gimmick of writing a lyric by stringing someone else's song titles together; the one I wrote was called, "She Doesn't Like Those Jonathan Richman Songs")

You might be able to find the right splitter cord at Radio Shack for even less (in the States, at least). I've used the cheap option with no problems (although I've never used Ric-O-Sound onstage).

I was on the waiting list for five years; I'm very glad I tend to be the patient sort! I'll try to get some photos taken this weekend (I need to borrow the camera). Soundwise, there's a big variation between the pickup switch settings. With the switch up, it sounds pretty close to a standard 4001/40...

Another LK arrives ...

#39/60, manufactured feb 14th, arrived last week (after travelling from Santa Ana to North Carolina, then back to California). Do I need to provide any information beyond, "I love it!" (as do the two of my Ric bass playing friends who have tried it out)? Thank you Mike Parks! Thank you Joh...

Fantastic movie, although it certainly reflects poorly on both bands! Did BJM actually use Rics? The one time I saw them, they had something like a half-dozen electric 12-strings, all cheap ****** models (Kapas or Voxes or Danos or cheaper). They had a roadie who spent the entire show re-tuning the ...
