Re: That McCartney Rockshow "Wings Over America" tone...

I think the tone has a lot to do with picking the stings closer to the bridge. I've also been told that the action on that bass was super low, about .115" to .120" at the last fret. Hm..? What I’ve read (don’t remember were) is that the action was very high on his bass, and that they (RIC)...

Re: .0047 cap and push/pull pot 'substitute'?

This is the same pot (Alpha, 500K log, DPDT) previously used by Rickenbacker, only they had different solder lugs. That's not the same pot. The Rickenbacker wiring cavity is shallow and typical push-pull pots will not fit, the one sold on the Rickenbacker website is a special pot with a short switc...

Re: Odd 4001?

BTW - anybody know where I can find a recipe / formula for Burgundyglo? I'm considering either Mapleglo or Burgundyglo (Lemmy vs. Cliff Burton.) I played around with TransTint last year when doing fireglo. http://www.homesteadfinishingproducts.com/htdocs/TransTint.htm http://www.veneersupplies.com/...

Re: Reserection! 1968 4001 Burgundyglo

I hate to say it, but I've all but given up on the HS in my '67. It's driving me nuts trying to get an even response on all strings without running into something. The A, D & G strings sound amazing, but I have to be careful how hard I hit the A. The E is way too over-powered, but I can't get i...

Re: Need wiring help for a 4001/4003 WITHOUT push-pull tone

If you’ve followed that schematic 100% there won’t be any sound as there is no ground wire from the electronics to the output jacks. But, using a pre-wired jack assembly I guess you have soldered the ground screen on one of the ends to the back of one of the pots.

Re: 4005 gets the shunt!

Only use I get from the 4.7nF is when playing both PUs together, making them blend instead of fighting each other (what cassius987 has been talking about for years :D ). Bridge PU solo with 4.7nF inline has no use - to me (but I’m no musician though). I tried 10nF inline cap. Noticeably less effect ...

Re: Diamond in the rough; the saga continues….

Looking really great :D
Tried to spot was is new this time – walnut wings obviously, new fret board (?) with jumbo frets, white nut, and the body got a bit more colour on it (?) for a darker and wider burst.

Re: "vintage" silver case ?

A: So I just called the Lads at the main shop and they said " That case is for both lefty and righty basses " It works for both . I doubt that (unless they have changed the silver cases). I have a lefty in a lefty silver case. If I simulate a righty (ugh.. buhh... ) by flipping it u...

Re: My new Fireglo - 4001V63 refinish

Geir, great job! Especially liked the fact that you FIRST got your information, THEN practiced, and then moved to the actual bass. If you are able to leave the bass out on a stand or hanger, over time, UV exposure will cause a mellowing of the finish. NOTE; It doesn't need to be and shouldn't be di...

Re: My new Fireglo - 4001V63 refinish

Won't hind being proud of having pulled this through to a satisfactory result. But also gained much more respect for this type of work and the craftsmen that performs it (like Paul W. and others). So many things to learn. Like the apparently simple task of mixing the colour made me crazy at one poin...
