According to the RIC manual, it is an oil finish:
FWIW, I used pure tung oil from The Real Milk Paint Company to clean/polish a 650S that I once had. It was very dirty when I got it, but it cleaned up great.

FWIW, the applicable table in the Smith book lists 5 JG and 20 NC (no color indicated on invoice) 950s for 1957.
