Re: Schaller strap locks on '74 4001?

@Joey: The water trick is nice indeed. But it won't help in my case I think, the hole is just too wide. The screw slides in and out easily without any actual screwing. @Gary: I'll try that, sounds fairly easy to do. I should have saved the original Rickenbacker saw dust that came out when I unscrewe...

Re: Schaller strap locks on '74 4001?

Gary's strap bolts are perfect! Unfortunately the thread of one of my bass' holes broke when I unscrewed the original strap bolt. Maybe the wood was a bit too old and dry, the thread came out together with the screw as saw dust. I'll have to fill the hole and tap it again. Can anybody give a recomme...

Re: Schaller strap locks on '74 4001?

Wow, I checked several stores in UK or US, shipping for these parts is more expensive than the parts themselves.

Where can I buy these in Germany?

It might even be cheaper to make them, provided you have access to a lathe..

Re: Schaller strap locks on '74 4001?

Thanks Antony. So you say I can't use the standard Schaller pins but I have to buy special ones for Rickenbackers, with the correct thread?

Schaller strap locks on '74 4001?

It happened to me twice now that my bass almost fell on the floor because of the strap slipping off. I'm almost decided I want to use Schaller strap locks now. However, my main concern is they might not fit exactly in the holes that are already there, either irreversibly widening them or not sitting...

Re: 4001 with dark fingerboard and dot inlays

If you put a wire across the .0047uF cap (smallest orange cap) in line with the bridge pickup, you will get more bass out of the bridge pickup, as Ken posted. Just soldering across the cap makes it easy to reverse. Yes, this mod is great, it makes the E string actually usable in my case! With the ....

Re: 4001 with dark fingerboard and dot inlays

Finally got it! Anyway, here's a little sound example for those interested in hearing it (sorry, no Close To The Edge yet): http://www.todesplanet.de/blog/?p=72 I think it sounds okay. The buzzing might be due to the low tension roundwounds I use. These are the Seymour Duncan replacement pickups, bu...

Re: 4001 with dark fingerboard and dot inlays

Still haven't got it yet.

Is there an official Rick reference song that is used as a benchmark when comparing instruments? :)

Re: 4001 with dark fingerboard and dot inlays

This is the message I got from the RIC customer service:

"That is a 4001 that someone has changed the fingerboard. It would not have
come from the factory like that."

A bit of a turnoff.

Re: 4001 with dark fingerboard and dot inlays

I have a theory now: Since the truss rods were broken on this it could have happened that somebody messed with the rods and damaged the fretboard. From what I've read this is a very common mistake with older 4001s.

Re: 4001 with dark fingerboard and dot inlays

An alternative idea is that the bass has had the fretboard replaced, and a refin, which could explain the very clean finish. Is it my imagination or do the frets look a little higher than stock? :? That wouldn't be too bad because I am planning to use medium gauge roundwounds. I figure that higher ...

Re: 4001 with dark fingerboard and dot inlays

Welcome, Sebastian! Thanks. Interesting bass there. This is only speculation, but that fretboard looks like the ebony dot one on a Model 4002, so maybe that's what someone was aiming for. Have you checked under the pickguard for any odd routing? I haven't got it yet. I can't tell how often I check ...

4001 with dark fingerboard and dot inlays

I just bought a lefty 4001 and ever since I wondered what exact model this is. http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=180366328840 It has a dark, presumably rosewood or ebony, fingerboard with dot inlays, which I have never seen on any other 4001. But it i...
